the TRACE ELLIOT thread: Part II

I've had this for a while, but just getting around to posting pictures. Here is my Trace Elliot BLX 150 1x10 combo sitting on top of one of my 1153's. Those two pair up quite nicely.

I've got a question for the group. I recently had an issue with my V8 where it produced a sort of hi pitched hum regardless of what bass I plugged in or which way I flipped the ground switch.

There was a countryman DI on the input and at first, if I bypassed it and went direct into the amp the problem went away but then something happened and this noise was there to stay.

Of course, I can't check the amp at home since my cabinets are on the band trailer...

The amp is clean and has very low hours on it.

Preamp tube???

Hey

Just found this TE thread and thought I'd post to it - so if you've seen my stuff posted on another thread - forgive me!

My TE AH500x, 1048 cab and 1528 cab - and the 66 P Bass I've had and played almost daily for 33 years don't hurt!

I've also got a Trace Elliot SMX Compressor and modded (for bass) TE Dirtbox - looking for a TE Quad Chorus to round it out.

:p:p:p

Nice set up! The sound of my '66P through a Trace amp (mine was a 122HV) still haunts me.....

You can run 2x 8 ohm cabs, side-by-each out of the jacks; or "daisy-chained" in-line from a single jack (total 4 ohm load)...

You can run a single 4 ohm cab out of one jack (4 ohm load)...

You can run just one 8 ohm cab (safe, and still effective with this amp, which is a powerful little booger)...

You can not run a 4 ohm cab along with any other cab: Running a total of LESS THAN 4 OHMS will likely burn out your amp.

You're the best! Thank you! :)

I am new to talk bass...just bought a Trace Elliot V8. The amp sounds great...well until the heater circuit opened. No front panel power on indication and the output tubes are all cold and dark...If you can help, I opened a new thread titled: "Trace Elliot V8...need tech help"

There are many pictures available on talk bass...it's the grail itself, #32.

Just in case, and if you aren't already aware of them...

British Audio Service

I'll give British Audio Service a jingle after the holidays to see if they can source the most appropriate parts and offer pointers for my V8 heater mod...plan to do the work myself as I am in Germany and have already disassembled the amp. A couple of turret terminals and pigtail fuses and I should be back in the fat.

Just (probably) made a KILLING on ebay.

Trace Elliot 1210 500 Watt Bass Amp from Combo | eBay

I kind of went out on a limb and assumed this thing will work just fine. Even if it's not, it's basically about an $800 head, so I could put another $300-400 into fixing it if necessary and still come out alright. But really if the preamp section (and dual band comp, etc...) works, I would be happy with it just how it is (and I can just run it into the power section of my SWR, or vice versa for an extra few watts).

I guess in about a week or 2 when it arrives, I'll be able to find out how big of a payoff I'll get or how big a hit I'll take on it.

Anyway, I'm pretty excited about it and if all goes well, I think it will go nicely with my older Trace cabs (1518 and 2108, circa 1990).

What is the idea behind just having a slot for the speaker? Is it supposed to be some kind of band pass box?

That would be a cool little combo although for that kind of money at that low a wattage/speaker count, personally I would probably go for something more like an SWR Baby Blue.

It's a good head out of a combo and you should be very happy with it's performance.
I just have an issue with the seller's description...
A. it's not a tube amp. It's tube preamp (12ax7) and mosfet power amp.
B. It DOES have a compressor (high & low blendable).
It's 500 watts not 600. though you would probably never tell the difference.

Yeah, I know all that stuff so I'm not too worried. Actually though I wasn't sure if it was 500 or 600w, but either is fine.

And BB's aren't exactly a "dime a dozen", they're getting more and more rare. And I just think they're great amps, or at least that was the impression I had last time I had a chance to play one which is while they were still in production. But other people's assessment of them has mostly jived with what I remember.

I'm sure that Trace is a great little low power combo too.

That ad took me to this ad, which I really wish I hadn't seen...don't have the coins right now.

That combo looks like it might be what this extension cabinet was designed to go with...or maybe not...all I know is that I saw this ad, and have searched and searched for info on a Trace cab like this, and I can't find out any info on it...

Yeah, the ebay listing said there was damage to the cab of the combo, so I don't know if the speaker was broken, or the cab itself had some damage or what, but I figured there's a good chance the damage was primarily physical and that the head would be just fine. So that's what I'm hoping for.

Even still, $225 is a pretty good price for either a Trace 12 band pre or a Trace 500w power amp. I think those little GP7 pedals go for at least $100 bucks, so I have a feeling I will come out on top on this deal.

When I first saw the ad about 5 days ago, it was like $70 or something. I was sure by the end a bunch of people would bid and drive the price way up, and indeed the price had already started rising consistently by the next day. But the blood bath I was expecting at the end with the price going up closer to $400-600 just didn't happen, probably because of the uncertainty of the condition of the head. That's why I didn't just go ahead and ask the seller to test it while the auction was going, because I was willing to go on faith that it was probably fine.

Nope.
That cab is stand alone and the 1210 head is built into the cab that it's supposed to be in. like this...
