The ultimate 112 cab

I am on the hunt for a small profile 12” cab that will be powerful enough for small to medium gigs. And that I could stack with a second for large gigs.

I want to hear your opinions and experiences. I like the look of the Aguilar SL112 and the Mesa Subway 112.

But I have never done a setup like this, so give me your thoughts. Don’t need super portable, but don’t want a bot anchor.

A pair of SL112s has been Julie Slick's go-to rig for the last several years. Hard to argue with that.

BTW, a nice feature of those SL112's is that they weigh next nothing. I helped Julie load in for a show once and when she handed me one I almost flung it in the air because I was expecting so much more weight. If you know how to juggle you could use three of these instead of apples or tennis balls.

That’s great to hear. I am. It familiar with her style. I play mostly indie rock and classic bar covers bands.

What about the Darkglass cabs. Has anyone played them?

Mesa Subway 112 will do it for sure.

As would an AudioKinesis Changeling or Hathor.

If size, weight, and easiness to move around is the main concern then you want Audiokinesis.

Another vote for one of the AudioKinesis cabs. Light, nice leather handle and form factor makes them easy to move, great sound per pound, and very flexible with port plugging options and switches. And yes, they sound great too. Duke (the owner) is a fantastic individual to work with. Check out the AudioKinesis thread...lots of good information.

I love the Mesa Subway 112 (400w)...it sounds great and is extremely portable ($750 new). The Subway cab is VERY road worthy than other 12" due to the metal grill and light weight.

On the other hand, you could look at the Ampeg 112AV (300w, $500)...it would be a great match for the Ampeg V4BRI.

Each of these can be stacked to give a powerful 2x12 setup.

I "upgraded" from a single NY121 (magnet failure long after warranty) after about 10 years to two Hartke HD112s and I've been very happy with them. They're small, light, and relatively cheap. Great big sound and very warm. They can sound vintage or modern depending on which way you throw your EQ settings.

They are also dual-impedance so you can run them as 4ohm or 8ohm if you wish.

Larry has always been a pleasure to deal with.

I'm driving mine with my TRB and BB bass right now, and my NS viol.

I bought a (used) Barefaced Big Baby 2 (12" + horn, with attenuator) and it's not even 30 lbs. Amazing sound. 8 ohms. Will take up to 800 watts. 97db efficient. I can recommend it highly, if you can find one.

If I had the cash, and was willing to spend bucks on something unheard, I'd look at barefaced.

I tried an Aguilar SL112 in a store, and came away wondering why guys like them so much. I thought it was just meh. Not much oomph, for me.

But I have (and am selling) a Mesa Subway 112 (see link below). It's a great cab. I bought it as an adjunct to the Subway 115, but it's a good standalone as well for that tight low end sound. IMO a SW112 driven by a Mesa D800+, or better yet, the new tube-driven WD800, would be the bees' knees.

That’s the kind of feed back I’m looking for. Is the SL not as big sousing as the SW?

If you want the lightest best bang for the buck there's the Audiokenisis TC-112. It does amazing things. Add Hathor 1203 and it's pure bliss.

I have a Bergantino CN112 which by itself is very good, sometimes I add my CN210 and it goes to fabulous.
