Followup post to say that the amp seems quite happy with the matched set of JJ KT88s.

I'm really temped by swapping the EL344 for the KT88, but the amp runs flawlessly for the moment. So it might not be worth it.

IMHO, use up the EL34s. When they get weak or start having problems, try KT88. I doubt you will notice much if any difference.

You can install KT88s whenever you want. However, AFAIK new tubes have an elevated rate of failure.

I assume you have a set of EL34s that are past their infant mortality risk, but not yet overly worn or damaged. I.E. they are in their prime.

If you are pushing the amp super hard, you may be better off with KT88s. If you are not pushing the amp to its limits, I would use up the EL34s.
