The growth of custom bass builders has made some of us a more fickle & picky group of customers.

Thinking that there is a bass out there that might fit my needs better than what I now have, can be a seductive force.

We have a great, diverse community here on talkbass, where it is pretty safe to buy, use, & flip various equipment with relative ease & safety.

Seeking your own perfect mix of gear to achieve that tonal nirvana in your head, especially with used gear without a lot of financial risk -- why not?

As has been said many times (with increasing frequency): "It is a great time to be a bass player!"

I got that bass from Adam and it is a really cool bass, just not exactly what I was looking for at the time. I have owned a couple of Valenti basses and each one was great, but ultimately were spec'd out by someone else. I have a custom ordered one (sherwood green J w/ PJ) that is to my specs and is absolutely perfect, but I would have never ordered it without playing one first, so it sorta works out. 2014 may see a 2nd custom order from Nino, just got to get some other things together before I dive into another custom order.

I get a lot of customers that have bought a used bass, usually here on TB, loved it but there was something that wasn't "them". They sell their newly aquired used bass and place an order for a bass that is more "them".

The great thing about buying used it that you can usually re-sell it for the same amount you bought it for so there is no real loss.

I get that, Nino, and I'm not being critical by the way - just curious. I can see people making high dollar orders for basses that are way off the beaten path and extremely individualized - like some of the stuff Pete is starting to do - living with the result for a while, and deciding it's not what they had in their head. Your business on the other hand is largely in high quality specimens within a species we all sort of "get," so I might expect a little less velocity.

But, again, no harm no foul. I just can't believe how many owners the Geddy Vee has had - and those are just the ones we know about! :cool:

No harm or foul taken.

That Geddy Vee made the rounds. So did a sherwood green J5 with Nordy DC5 pickups. Oh my. LOL

Yes, each pickup is 3 - way switchable. In my quick take, I prefer single coils for articulate fingerstyle and series wiring for that 'hard rock with a pic' tone. I haven't played around with the parallel setting too much yet. Keep in mind this bass also has a 2-band Glock preamp (defeatable with a push/pull pot) which also introduces a whole new pallette of tones. This bass is a serious tone monster!
