The Valenti Megathread Part IV

Yes, each pickup is 3 - way switchable. In my quick take, I prefer single coils for articulate fingerstyle and series wiring for that 'hard rock with a pic' tone. I haven't played around with the parallel setting too much yet. Keep in mind this bass also has a 2-band Glock preamp (defeatable with a push/pull pot) which also introduces a whole new pallette of tones. This bass is a serious tone monster!

Thanks for the reply. Maybe you or someone else can explain to me why these and other dual coil/MM style pickups are 3 way switchable? Why not 4 way? I understand the option of series/parallel...I have that switch in 2 of my basses. My real question is why wouldn't you want to be able to choose which side of the coil to switch to. For example, in the bridge position, it would almost be like being able to choose between '60's position or '70's position and in the neck position, jazz neck or more of a mudbucker type sound? Then you could also switch to dual coil so I guess it would be 5 way??? Someone please educate me.....

Random question, my Valenti seems to get some odd vibrato on single notes on the E and B strings above the 12th fret. Has anyone else dealt with this? I get it a little bit on the higher strings as well, but it sounds like I'm playing two out of tune notes on the lower strings.... Help?

I've never dealt with that with either of my two Valenti's, but it may help to list what the specs of your bass are so that someone with a similar build can weigh in. I will say I had a similar thing on a Lakland once and I found it was a bad string.

Here's the specs to the bass (#158)

S24FJ5
Honduran mahogany body
Spalted Flame top
Graphite reinforced Maple neck
-Ebony board
-33" scale
HipShot B Style Bridge
-17mm string spacing
HipShot UltraLites
1 3/4" nut
Nordstrand dual coils
-2 3 way for series/single coil/Parallel
Nordstrand 3 band pre

I generally play with really heavy strings thinking maybe that they might be a bit heavy for this instrument.

I was the steward of #86 for a while, out of all the basses I've owned it is one of the few I regret selling. If it had a VTC I would likely never have sold it, I should have brought it to Nino to make that change.

If the owner is floating around how is she doing? Sell her back to me!

Last I heard, this bass is in Japan.
