The Valenti Megathread Part IV

I have had my whiteburst Valenti 5er for a month now and I still get excited when I play it. Only done one gig (new singer getting up to speed) and more than a few rehersals, but the bass is killer.

I would highly recommend the Nordy Big Single/Nordy pre setup. No noticeable hum BTW. I didn't go with the VTC as I never seemed to use it on my Sadowskys and I don't miss it on my Valenti.

Lastly, Nino's strings are great. They have been played heavily for 30 days and still have lots of life left. The tapered B really makes a difference on a 34" scale 5er and sounds great.

I will definately be adding a Valenti P or PJ in the future. Just not sure if I go active or passive.....

After contemplating a build for about the last year or so and emailing with Nino for almost a month, I finally put down a deposit this morning.

1 3/4 nut width

Out of curiousity, why the chambered swamp ash? My swamp ash 5er is well under 8lbs and not chambered.

What do think of this Idea? I am starting to REALLY enjoy playing Lined Fretless bass. And I REALLY Enjoy playing Old #092. What if I was to have the current neck defretted, and made into a Lined Fretless? It has Ebony Boards, and a 35" scale, so it's Literally SCREAMING to be Fretless. Ideally I'd send the neck to Nino for the transformation.

Plan "B" would be to have a New Lined Fretless made to match. But would it get a New Number, or would it be #092fl? Or am I off my Rocker?

Thoughts? Comments?

Why not price out a new lined fretless neck and have the best of both worlds?

Edit... If you really like the bass and can afford an identical fretless, that is what I would do. Switching necks is a bit of a P.I.TA.

OK! Nino-San got ahold of me last night. He offered me 2 Options:

1) Convert the current Neck to Fretless (Preferred)
2) Build a New Neck(More work, More Money)

and we're moving forward with Option 1, Modding the current neck! :bassist:

Bass is on it's way to New York!

Maple Neck & fretboard
Passive electionics
Aguilar AG 5P/J-HC pickups
Aluminum Hipshot A Bridge
Chrome hardware
Red Tort Pickguard
Dunlop Strap Locks

The only thing I'm still on the fence about are the Aguilar pickups. Read a lot of good stuff about them but no real first-hand experience. Can anyone enlighten me on them? Thoughts on Aggies vs. Nordies?

Nordie Fat Stacks are on 3 of my basses, including #092. I like it paired with the Aggie Pre though...

I am a big fan of the Nordy J-bass single coils, but I thought the Nordy PJ set was a little lacking in the low mids and got pretty harsh in the highs. Granted, I paired them with a 3 band preamp in an ash/maple bass, so that could have had something to do with it. I have Aguilar 70s wind J bass pickups in my Valenti 5 string and in my fretless and they are killer (however, both single coils). I had a bass with a passive aggie P pickup and it was extremely hot but maintained a lot of vintage tonality, I'd compare it to the Hanson P bass pickup, which I believe you are familiar with, but more vintage voiced.
