The Video Game Thread

My partner really wanted to play the new Indiana Jones game so we purchased an Xbox Series X as a family present for Christmas. Great game! She hadn’t even seen the movies, but I’m a fan of the original trilogy. The game feels like a movie and hits all the touch points that make Indiana Jones what it is.

We also just played Hogwarts Legacy. Another IP my partner knows little about (hasn’t read the books or seen the movies), but she also loved that game. As someone who was a big fan of the books in my youth (the movies much less so), I also really enjoyed exploring the world.

Between the two games we’ve gotten close to 100hrs of play time, so money well spent, IMO. We just started Witcher 3 which I’m enjoying but she isn’t taking too. We may switch over to Jedi Survivor and see if she enjoys that more since she likes the original trilogy of movies.

I've been seeing a lot of praise for the Indiana Jones game so I'm definitely interested. Still need to figure out how to justify a PS5 though. I can't say anything about Jedi Survivor, but I can't recommend it's predecessor, Jedi Fallen Order enough. One of the best gaming experiences I've had in recent years. If survivor even approaches the quality of Fallen Order, I'm sure it'll be great.

Beyond Good & Evil - 20th Anniversary Edition

BG&E was one of my favorite games of the PS2 era. It wasn't a big seller so it was hard to find even back then. It has quite the cult following and I've been wishing for a way to play it again. Ubisoft answered my wishes by releasing the 20th Anniversary Edition last year. It's not perfect, but the core gameplay is there, which is what matters. Great blend of sci-fi action-adventure, espionage, and stealth. Still keeping my fingers crossed that the sequel that was announced in 2008 will still happen and it won't be crap.

I loved this game on GameCube. I wish they would bring back Eternal Darkness from that era as well.

I wouldn’t personally suggest getting a console for Indiana Jones. I found it to be more a 7/10 game. I ended up rushing through the last third because I got bored and was left with the feeling of wishing I could play uncharted and far cry 3 again.

The story and production were all excellent (although the game is absolutely massive as a result) but it never really felt like a game to me. If I had paid for it (vs Game Pass) I wouldn’t have felt I got my money’s worth.

That’s just my opinion though, everyone else seems to love it.

It’s definitely an experience, and it does at times feel more like you’re playing a movie than a game. The story and production are all top tier. I’m excited to replay RDR2 on the Series X, as that’s another game that was more an experience than a game.

My brother bought me Bomb Rush Cyberfunk for my birthday. It's a pretty obvious homage to Jet Set Radio and though I don't have a ton of experience with JSR, Bomb Rush is much easier and more fun to control. It has an intriguing story that goes deeper than just tagging more than your rivals. I haven't been playing games much lately, but I gave this a try and it might bring me out of my hiatus for awhile.

Been replaying the Metal Gear series. Finished MGS over the weekend, and I had forgotten just how amazing that game is. It still holds up well after all these years. I’ve started MGS2, and it has also been enjoyable, albeit slower with all its dialogue and cutscenes. I’m excited to eventually get to MGS3 with the recent remake / remaster.

I actually came here to post the same. I don't have the remake yet, but I may buy it soon.

I recently started a new save on MGSV, but then made the decision to try and beat all the games I have in release order. So that'll be MG1 (the MSX version, I don't know if I might look at any of the others), MG2, MGS, MGS2, 3, and then 5. I wish I had a way to play 4 or Peace Walker, but I don't currently.

The plot, lore, and themes of Metal Gear have been near and dear to my heart for a long time, but MGSV was my first, and it's the game I have the most hours in. So, I hope to fix that.

Just beat Metal Gear 1... not Metal Gear Solid, but the original that came out on the MSX. IMO it doesn't show its age particularly well... I decided to follow a guide, but despite this, it took me about ~8 hours mostly due to deaths and resets. The stealth sections were pretty good and the boss fights were interesting, but... basically any time combat was forced against large numbers of regular enemies, that's where the game really gets difficult and not necessarily in a fun way. I got to memorize a few sections like the back of my hand from repeating them so much. I don't know what the Easy difficulty does, but I didn't want to do it, so I suppose that's on me. It doesn't help that you only get the Body Armor item like 3/4 of the way through the game.

Also, there's a lot of backtracking involved in the game, and the lack of a map or any sort of navigational aid makes it a lot more challenging. That's frankly the biggest reason I used a guide. If I tried it again, I could probably complete it without the guide, but having to futz with figuring out which keycards unlock which doors would be tedious.

But, despite my skill issue, Operation Intrude N313 has been completed. I booted up MG2. It seems like it will be a lot better and more polished in this regard.

I beat Metal Gear 2, and am about halfway into Metal Gear Solid.

MG2 was definitely more fun than the first. You can really tell they were laying the foundation for what would come later, in terms of the gameplay, the art, the characters and dialogue, etc.

Just defeated Psycho Mantis in MGS. It took me trying and dying a few times before I remembered the trick about switching your controller to the other port-- which, in the Steam release, is helpfully listed as an option menu item. Cyborg Ninja was an absolute PAIN though. It took me so many tries to figure out that you're supposed to switch to your gun at the end...

I got myself a PS5 Pro and a 65" TCL QM6K during the Black Friday sales last month. Going forward I'm making it a point to beat games before switching to a new one because for a while I rarely finished games because I was constantly hopping between games.

I just got finished beating Sonic Frontiers and Sonic X Shadow Generations (started with something familiar) and on Friday I'll be adding Devil May Cry 5 SE and Stellar Blade to my PS5 collection. I have a small stack of PS4 games too but I'm waiting for my Corsair MP600 Pro LPX 2TB drive to arrive because I'll be installing PS4 games on the expansion drive to leave plenty of space for PS5 games on the console's main storage.
