I wrote a Link Removed on it, if anyone's interested. I had to gloss over a lot in the interest of brevity but it's a decent overview of the how and why.

I didn't mention this in my post but compressing your record doesn't matter for the radio anymore. Stations now apply so much compression themselves that unmastered and mastered tracks get broadcast the same. Funny, huh?

Nice post. Good read.

It reminds me of an article by [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]. At the time, Metallica's newest recording was considered the most compressed recording ever. It's sad. It all just comes down to the simple fact that humans react, remember and respond more to louder recordings, not better recordings.
