The Wood Porn Thread

Giant Swamp Kauri (35,000+ years old from www.langcaster.com in New Zealand). That pocket in the wood and left-side bass (mine) is copalized amber, the gum starting to change after all those yrs under pressure, chemical changes, etc--but would take about another 1 million to actually change to the stone called amber. I like to go to the website just to see all the guitars and the varied designs in the wood from all those years. Really beautiful.

Just picked up a nice set of Claro Walnut , which I've got a matched pair out of (1/2" thick) and a set of curly purpleheart .
I'd been looking for just the right set of figured purpleheart and am quite happy , it is for my main instrument.

Why not re-saw and bookmatch it for the whole top and bond it to some Walnut that's a single piece?
Because that's not what I bought it for.
It's going to be the Mk.II version of this:

The first attempt ended in tears. The wood design was a bit more than my feeble skills were able to execute. The next attempt will be better.
I have the hardware, the ebony, the padauk, and now the walnut. I am now patiently awaiting finding the right piece of maple.

Five woods in this project - mahogany, birdseye, burled walnut, wenge, ebony.
Alas, not mine, but my Dream Bass, the Alembic "Balance K" body style with cocobolo top, back and headstock. There is a TB'er who owns one of these, hopefully he will post photos so I can drool over it some more.

Thanks! I have some J basses that are fancier and more expensive, but this one seems to generate the most positive reactions for some reason. Maybe because you don't often see a P bass made of fancy woods (more common with a J style) and you don't often see a wood pickguard or 72 P shape PG.
I love reading the Alembic descriptions of the various wood veneer layers, and their supposed effect on tone: "The Macassar Ebony adds fruity undertones, with a clean finish, while the bocote layer adds a note of whimsy to an otherwise Neopolitan Palette". They have definitely drunk the cool-aid on Tonewoods. Not sure I buy it, but those are some gorgeous veneers. Basses aren't bad either.
I used my share. Assembled this 20+ years ago. It was an early assemble for me...so, too much oil. Damn thing weighs in @14lbs.
Edit: At the time, Warmoth did not sell Jazz bodies routed for a MM Sting Ray pickup (do they now?). I needed a local wood guy for assistance. He was a bit afraid of what coulda happened.
