Hey Matt, on the Redwood, try making up a small batch of thinned epoxy and do a couple coats of this before you finish if using a lacquer or poly finish. Helps to resist dents a lot more successfully than just finishing over the redwood.

I've used CPES on redwood and it does help once you are ready to finish. The hard part for me is the dents that occur before you even get the guitar to finish! A cleaner, less cluttered shop would probably help....
