Hey, what's the problem with Drama? I like Drama!

Fragile's got some great songs, but some pretty ropey moments that weaken it as an album IMO. But I'm also pretty surprised the TfTO is flying so high in this thread. And Yes, Time and a Word and all the post main sequence albums are just getting ignored like anything!

I'm bumping Yessongs just for the great performances of a good cross-section of the band's music at that time.

Won't this get a little dull if it's all votes and no comment or discussion? IMO.

My minimalist Yes collection would be Yessongs (for the best tracks from Yes Album, Fragile, CttE, all performed so well :P), Relayer and probably GftO. I'd then add the Yes Album, CttE and Fragile (in that order) for the studio versions, then TfTO just to complete the main sequence. And maybe 90125 for a taste of the newer/Rabin type stuff. Funnily enough, that's just what I own at present. :D

BTW, I don't think any Yes collection is really complete without their version of America (which isn't on any of the original albums here listed as it appeared on the Yesterdays compilation - although my Fragile CD has it as a bonus).

I'm not sure how the game is played here, but I'll make a quick comment, being an old Yes fan.

While Close to the Edge is a masterpiece IMO, I was totally blown away by Relayer. To me, the replacement of Wakeman by Patrick Moraz gave the the group a shot in the arm. From what I understand from interviews, the Yes guys were quite freaked out by the 'fusion' thing blossoming at that time, and felt they needed to step it up a notch to compete with the amazing stuff being produced by Chick Corea, Jeff Beck, McLaughlin, etc. at that time. It turned a lot of Yes fans off, but turned a lot of fusion fans onto Yes IMO and IME.

I absolutely HATE the post Steve Howe stuff. It's not that it's bad.. it just has very little to do with Yes.

Yessongs is a great performance and a horrible recording IMO.

Fun thread. I'd add a point to Relayer.

K

PS Also, nice to see Tales getting a little love. The first and last track/Album side are wonderful.... the middle two not so much:D

So go on then Mr Jung - copy and paste the list with your one positive point for the day added to the Relayer score, with a little plus sign to show how you voted. And be sure to make a minus vote as well. ;) We want this damn game over with!

I agee with every word about Relayer, BTW - definitely one of my faves. The recordings on Yessongs are bad in places, especially the last side of the original triple album (Yours is no disgrace/Starship trooper), but not so bad elsewhere - though far from perfect by today's standards.

Btw, scottgun - I've been enjoying following this thread, so I started playing some Yes stuff on my stereo last night and ended up jamming along on my trusty Rickenbacker. Had such a good time I've ordered "Yes Complete" from Amazon to learn some of the lines I've never got to grips with before. So thank you for that!

Yep. I'm playing Going for the One alot now which hasn't budged in the game so far.

For the record, I do like some of the stuff on Drama, so I am guilty simply of picking on the weak-scored album in this game. :)

Jady - you posted your + and - signs without amending the score, so I've edited the list in this post to bring things up to date.
