There's NO Solo Bass Night 4 thread yet?

I was there.

Awesome, awesome stuff. I picked up one of Jeff Schmidt's CDs while I was there, too.

I was the guy in the Dead Kennedys T-shirt who cheered when Dave Grossman displayed the TalkBass bumper stickers onstage. :D

Next time, we should wear nametags so we know who is who! It's nice to put a face on the people we interact with here on a daily basis. ;)

Very cool night. My drummer (who made the drive with me and was more excited than I was) turned to me just before the end of Jeff Schmidt's set and remarked incredulously, "it's amazing to me that guys this incredible are playing in a small coffee shop in Berkeley." I'd have to agree. Each of these guys approach the bass in such an individual and innovative way.

Plus, it was a nice bonus to hang out with them afterwards. Even Jean Baudin who said he was having a bad day on stage (and turned down the offer to play one more song at the end of his set) sat and talked with us for quite a while, letting us hold his 11 string and answering everyone's questions. Jeff Schmidt is a very cool dude with my kind of sense of humor. I just talked briefly to Michael Manring and shook his hand, but what an incredibly gracious and humble guy.

I already had Outre (which my drummer bought last night) but I picked up a copy of The Jesus Fist and we both grabbed Jean's new CD which is amazing.

I have no idea why any musician (let alone a bass player) within driving distance would miss a night like this. Good stuff.

I was in the second row on the right side with the white hat. I noticed a guy was front and center with camcorder on a tri-pod that appeared to be filming the entire show. Does anyone know who this guy is, or what he is doing with the footage?

Anyone want to organize a get together? Maybe we can contact Grossman about it?

I was sitting right behind him! Well, I know a guy did that at the first solo bass night too and I see those videos on youtube a lot. Dunno exactly what he is doing with them, it might be a venue thing, might be a sponsor thing, who knows...

Same with me. I was really impressed, not just with how clean his technique was (both tapping and slapping), but with the depth of his compositions. Great stuff.

Even more impressive considering that he told me after the show that he "never practices". :eek: Because of that he said he had to make himself sit down and relearn some of his songs.

Speaking of clean technique, I told my drummer that of all of Michael Manring's amazing chops I was perhaps most impressed by how cleanly he can play chords on a fretless. Good stuff.

Actually, I do play my bass a lot - what I meant is I never practice my finished songs. I usually try to get them polished before a gig, but that didn't happen this week. And some songs have little "unwritten" parts that I just kinda make up as I go. Keeps things interesting!

Thanks to all of you who came out to the gig!!!

Yeah, that's what I took away from what you said. That basically you had to relearn your own stuff. I didn't mean to make it sound like you just roll out of bed and crank out awesomeness since that doesn't give you credit for all of your hard work.
