I just got a "new" 1996 Fender American Jazz Deluxe that was in need of a setup big time when I got it. I don't do too many setups from scratch -- usually just a tweak here or there but this bass needed the work before I could play it at all.

I look at the stickied resources in this section as well as tons of other guides online and I found that these videos were the best for me. Easy to follow and the results on my jazz were outstanding.

Good videos but he does not address what to do on the truss rod if you have one that is problematic, like, rusted or gauled nut. Removing the nut, lubing the nut. How not to tighten the nut if it's very tight. These are the things that will cause a novice to do severe damage to their guitar. Not every guitar has a smooth operating truss rod nut with
sufficient travel left in it. These are the things I like to warn against and offer solutions.

Those are pretty good video's, but I'd be a bit worried about a noob performing step 3, and one doesn't need any gauge to check neck relief.
