Thiele/Small info for Gauss 2841 12"

Hi all,

Can anyone supply me with or point me to where I might get the Thiele/Small parameters for a 12" Gauss 2841 driver? I can't find info anywhere....:mad:

I have a couple of 2841's that I was given back in '94 as chassis sans cones and I finally got them rebuilt about 4 years ago. They are still being used a doorstops :rolleyes: and I would like to build a cab for them....

With drivers that old from a no longer in business company you may have to measure them yourself.

That would be a big mistake. Not knowing the specs you can't design the box, nor can you know how it will work. I just had the unfortunate job of telling a guy who built one of my cabs and loaded it with a non-recommended fifteen with only 1.8mm xmax that his cab is displacement limited to only 20 watts through most of its bandwidth. :crying:
That's not something you can possibly enjoy finding out after spending more than a little time and cash on building the cab.

There is a time and place to dump old junk, and now is the time for this driver.

Not every driver is a toss out... f'rinstance, I just popped a JBL M151-8 into an ancient Rock Amps combo. The driver is NOS, never been used, still in the factory box. The no-name driver in the combo had a voice coil rub and is shot. The amazing part is, the JBL is a literal perfect fit. Bolt pattern matched 100%, as did the box volume and tuning. Pure luck.

For the above Gauss driver, throw it away. There is no point whatsoever in undertaking all the effort to build a cab for a dynosaur driver of unknown parentage.

No way! Vintage speakers rule! Gauss speakers were some of the best in their day, and those particular drivers are rated at 400w. I love old speakers, dude. Those particular speakers get high dollar on Ebay.

Is there a place that you can send it to that can do the ratings for you? Seems a shame to have such nice drivers and not to be able to know what to do with them.

bgavin, before you throw out any more old speakers, contact me and if they're desirable I'll pay for shipping if you don't want them. That's a big waste of vintage excellence.

Some are, some aren't. Some are total dogs that people seem to love for all sorts of obscure reasons.

Somehow, I don't think he meant send them to landfill.

I wont' argue for or against that particular model, but SOMEWHERE, on the net or off, someone likely has the T-S parameters for a lot of stuff up to a ceratin point in time. Beyond that, T-S parameters are likely replaced by really old marketing materials or obscurity.

In the past few years I've had a look at some JBL and Altec Lansing stuff that at the time I thought was simply awesome. And in some ways some of it still was. But a lot of it had been surpassed considerably in the meanwhile.

Still, there's always room for a Model A or a Model T in someone's collection, and it can be fun to drive one, I'm sure.

Typical old drivers had tiny Xmax limitations and no bottom. JBL made lots of gorgeous drivers, but they are still dinosaurs. The NOS 15" I mentioned above weighs more than 18 pounds. It has no bottom end, but is loud as hell in a modest combo amp. It serves a purpose, plus I know what its specs are.

Admittedly, the Gauss may be wonderful antique drivers and I am simply unaward of that. I'm not in the antique driver business, so I have no need to build the required test jigs to determine their T/S characteristics. If somebody wants to provide authenticated specs, I will certainly add them to my spread sheet.

Yeah I know: I saw that :crying: At the very least I have found the info I was after: I may sell them, or hang them on the wall, or build a cab for them with a crossover to take the bass out :hmm:

I have these 15" sitting around and not really sure they are viable enough to bother with EBay or even using....anyone?

Kappa Pro 15LF 8om ceramic magnet 600 watts
Electro-voice 15L (recone, 8 ohms) 200 watts RMS
