Things that would never "fly" today

Lots of interesting things in this thread - hard to know the times each comment refers to though. One interesting through line is the comments about doing things like riding trains or going to cities. For these the time of the reference is important - I took the train and wandered around Boston as a kid, at a time far far more dangerous than now, I am guessing that these comments must mostly refer to a similarly low crime time such as the 50’s or early 60’s, versus the high crime/high atmospheric lead era of late 60’s-90’s

Thing I miss that wouldn’t fly now?

Even as late as the early 80s (and all times previous), kids would ride horses to and from my school. They kept them in the pens at the school Rodeo arena, with hay and water all day during school. Same thing with the small town stores. You’d see kids and teenagers go to the store for snacks and drinks on their horses, bareback. There were still hitch rails outside the stores to tie your horse to, when I was little.

Probably a good idea not to. The cheap imported stuff everyone sells is loaded with lead...to the extent the flier that comes with the hose says to wash hands after handling.

I put on work gloves. AND wash my hands.

As a kid, I was told that my mother and I were in a head-on crash when I was 11 months old. From the description of 'car seat' I was in, it looked like those. Nothing but a raised seat and a bar around it, would have been 1971.

I was in the back seat, and I flipped forward onto the floor of the back. Barely a scratch on me, but the car was totaled. Mom was ok.

They made kids tougher back in those days!

I wrestled a bear at the Philadelphia Civic Center when I was 16. The line of guys to do it was pretty interesting. Guy behind me had, apparently, also wrestled an orangutan and boxed a kangaroo. Some other stuff I think, but what I remember is him telling me that the kangaroo "boxed" him for a few minutes, then leaned back on it's tail and kicked him. He flew a dozen feet or more into a wall. He said that hurt.

I watched an Oswald Bates compilation on YouTube last night. I have an acquaintance who pontificates in a similar manner, which reminded me of the Oswald skit, which then reminded me of this thread.
But yeah, watching that last night, I haven't laughed that hard in a long, long time.
Especially when I then watched the Wanda skits. Oh my, hilarious.

I'm from MA and don't remember any high crime during the late 60's in Boston, in fact I hitchhiked across the country twice from Ma to CA in 1969 with no problems at all, once with a bass on my back, sometimes alone sometimes with other travelers. I would give anything for those times to come back, was an innocent era. Anything I've posted has been from the 60's. I know there were problems from busing later on during the 70's and 80's.
