Things that would never "fly" today

Our Phys Ed teacher kept a list of names of those who broke the rules. We knew what was coming.
He would come into the change room/shower and call out the names. We were lined up, naked, in the shower with our hands and faces against the wall. Our teacher would bring in the most deflated utility balls he could find, wind up and whip them at our bare a$$es, as hard as he could. He didn't always hit us in the bottom.
Pretty sure he wouldn't get away with that these days....

Oh, wow, okay, that reminds me of something from 4th grade...

It's 1969 or maybe 1970. Suburban elementary school outside of Pittsburgh PA. I am 8 or 9 years old. My math teacher, Mr. M, is an ex-Marine who still sports the flattop crewcut he got in basic training while my classmates & I are just beginning to let our hair grow down below our ears, 'cuz we liked The Beatles. Mr. M clearly didn't.
Y'know what else Mr. M didn't like? Wise guys. Once in a rare while someone would wise-off in class, and Mr. M would reach into the bottom drawer of his desk and pull out a big wooden Howie Hammer-model regulation paddleball racquet. Then he would grab Mr. Wise-Cracker by the ear, haul him off into the hallway, and the two of them would return a few minutes later. The wise guy was generally silent for the rest of class.

One day I didn't do my math homework. I don't remember why. Mr. M asked me why, and I said something flip, I don't even remember what. Out came the paddleball racquet, Mr. M drags me out into the hallway. Wow, I'm finally going to find out what happens to Wise Guys!

Mr. M says "turn around and face the lockers."
Not sure why...perhaps because I'd already said one flip thing and now I was on a roll...I say "No"
Mr M, this time louder and now with the paddleball racquet raised in the about-to-slam-a-kill-shot position, repeats "TURN AROUND AND FACE THE LOCKERS!"
And again, somehow atypically emboldened and defiant, I say "No"
So Mr. M says "Fine, have it your way" and proceeds to whack me in the dick with his paddleball racquet.

He whacked me in the dick with his paddleball racquet!

Every time I recall that incident I have to let it sink in for a second: A grown man in a position of authority spanked an 8- or 9-year-old student in the genitals with a heavy wooden paddle as punishment for Not Doing Homework, and maybe also for Being A Defiant Wise-Ass About It.

Think that would fly today?

You read mine about getting punched in the mouth by my Junior High school principal and getting dragged to the front of the class in my chair with my hair then getting thrown against the lockers by the gym/science teacher?

At my school kids used to have their guns and rifles on gun racks in the back windows of their pickup trucks all the time. So did the teachers. Most times we didn't even bother to lock the doors. We didn't even roll up the windows.
On Thursdays, our Texas History teacher had a "trading post" day, where kids would trade things like Rodeo trophy belt buckles, school supplies, and guns & knives. No one even blinked an eye to say it was bad or wrong. It was just accepted as commonplace.
We never had anything more violent than a fistfight ever occur. Whats wrong now - is you can't trust people to behave decently.View attachment 4034367
Those guns are facing the wrong direction.
