keep a 1' piece of different gauge roundwounds for nut files...

not as quick acting as a proper cutting file, but will do the job...

works better than a needle file on graphite or plastic. For brass, you need a real file

I reckon they're a bit thick for use as a garrote...

A good number of my regular customers like their strings to be super fresh. When I change a set for them I give the lightly used strings to the music programs in the local schools. They never have enough money to keep their instruments in decent strings.

I save my old strings - a habit from back in the day when I couldn't afford them as easily as I can today.

I soak them in denatured alcohol for 24 hours, wipe them off, and then they go into a plastic bag.

I'm considering buying a digital caliper, going through the bag, and sorting them all by gauges. Donating them to my old high school's jazz band program sounds like a great idea to me.

A while back I used an old G- or D-string in a provisional repair of the accellerator wire in a friend's car...

Apart from that... nothing. I have a cardboard box full of used strings...

Bass strings are probably a little too thick, but I have heard of auto/body guys using guitar strings to remove windshields in cars. Poking it through the seal and running it around the edge.

I'm definitely going to try the weed whacker idea!!!!!

I've not bothered making one since I wanna make the transition to flats anyway when I get the money but someone I know tried it and said it gave his strings some zing back.

I like to have a few around, as they're damn useful to ground yourself with while you're working inside your computer. Also my wife keeps finding ways of working them into art projects. Quite good for tying plants onto bamboo poles to.

+1. It was the exhaust for a Suzuki jeep from my former guitard. We were on our way to practice at the time. If we were 2 guitards, we would have lost the muffler.

Cut your A string into 6 inch lengths,
go to your bathrom with the only a small light on,
cover your wrist/inner forearm in tomato sauce,
place 3 0r 4 string pieces running down the length of the "wound"
and pull at them and wiggle your fingers, a la The Terminator.
