Things to use old strings for

My faithful hiking boots were in need of replacement shoe laces. Used the outer winding of a nickle-plated E string to reinforce the ends of laces made from 550 paracord. The paracord is too slick to hold a bow so the laces constantly come untied. Next, I need to find some suitable wax to coat them so they will stay knotted.

Cut off the ball-ends and keep them to thread onto guitar strings, converting them into bass strings. Also they make great shims/spacers for shifting bridge saddles back further than designed (thread the ball onto the intonation screw). Also if your ball-ends are too close to the saddle and the ball-end securing winding rides up onto the saddle you can thread an old ball-end onto the bass string as a spacer to shift it away from the saddle.

I live on a busy road, the vibration of the traffic makes my radiators rattle in an unbearably irritating way. I have just jammed 2" of .030 string into the gap between radiator and mounting bracket to cure this. Having a range of old gauges meant I could select the one gauge that fits the gap

I used them to make snares in a home made drum. They sound good.

Was it last Christmas or the year before but one member was showing off bracelets his wife made out of old strings. They were pretty cool looking.

I'll have to see if I can dig up that thread....
