That's what I was thinking.
I would not go anywhere near 45mph in one of those! I might go as high as 20mph, and I wouldn't even do that without a helmet. And it would only be for fun on private property, never in traffic.
EDIT: The first thing it reminded of was bumper cars!

Other than the highways, the roads in England are small. Its not too much of a stretch to see why small cars got along well there.That's what I was thinking.

On some back roads, the mini cooper was the only car that could pass others safely and quickly.
Made famous by Mr. Bean!( not referring to his Mini Cooper)
After long usage, a road will develop two parallel grooves from the left & right wheels of all the cars. The front wheel of the Reliant Robin would always be on the hump between those grooves, making driving an unstable experience. Yes, you don't see them much. I had a ride in one in the late 80s I think.
That one is creepy. I remember having one that was a funny looking clown. Not creepy.
Oh...I just noticed one of the pics has Elvis in it.
I can just see in my mind the parents of an unruly child in the early 1960s telling the kid..."Don't make me turn the crank" Instilling enough fear to cause the little nipper to comply.
Yeah, I was surprised to see that, too.
Me too also. Since there weren't any foxy babes in the pic, I looked at the cars.
