Well! Welcome back and howdy.
Uncle Flick-which I had to "10-9" so much, I changed to "Irish Setter"-dog we had and I'm mostly Irish, then "Silver Panther"-a thing on a chain my daughter gave me. For skip, I was CSA*598-local CB club in Miami in the 70s.

*Confederate Sidebanders Association-an offshoot from the Yankee Sidebanders. No "the South shall rise again" feelings, just a name.

Our (my dad and I) first CB was a Radio Shack basic model where you had to buy the crystals for each channel individually.

Yep! We had a Radio Shack police scanner that was set up the same way.

Used to 'shoot skip' all over the country.

Funniest skip signal I ever got was a guy I could hear, but he couldn't hear me when I tried to reply. He was clearly a few beers into his day, as he just kept saying, "Anybody copy? Anybody got me out heer in Moe-beeeeel, Moe-beeeeel, Moe-beeeeel Al-bamma? I say, Moe-beeeeel, Moe-beeeeel, Moe-beeeeel Al-bamma..."

I tried, but since I was on a mobile unit, it just didn't carry. To this day, I can't even see the name of that town in print without thinking, "Moe-beeeeel, Moe-beeeeel, Moe-beeeeel Al-bamma..."

My CB handle was Boogie Man. What was all of yours?

Oh, man... it's been so long, I honestly can't even remember.

While you were gone, I saw a TV commercial that had a kid playing with little blue robot that looked very similar to your avatar. I nearly wondered if it was some kind of signal for help.

I was 12 or so during the CB craze and had a shirt like this one, except it had the words WOODY BOOGIE under the car.

So I was the Woody Boogie Boy.

He made being extra-nerdy (almost) cool. And with Isao Tomita's version of a Debussy arabesque as his theme music! Always liked those PBS segments.

Ashland. Still have a Midland 40 channel and a K-40 antenna somewhere. As a kid I would hook my walkie talkie up to the TV antenna on the roof. I could hear transmissions from Tx. Way up in Pa. They couldn't hear my pitiful 4 Watt replies though.

If conditions are right...I knew a story of 2 guys that talked from south Miami to Hawaii on 1/2W handhelds. They exchanged postcards to verify it.

The QSL cards validate the contact, but .5W, maybe the handhelds drove a Linear.

Nope. They originally made contact off of their mobiles. While maintaining that contact, one said he wanted to try something and dug out his walkie-talkie. When he told the other guy what he was talking on, that guy grabbed his. If the skip rolls right-which it seemed to often do in South FL. Even now(OK, a coupla years ago-last time I hooked up a CB in my van), I'll hear stuff rolling in from WV, PA, etc.

That crazy F1 layer! In Ga. I used to get New York and Chicago A.M. stations at night.

While at Ft. Hood, working on a Huey in the hangar, I would turn on the H.F. radio (30mHz band). I sometimes would hear a command chopper directing battle in Nam. From in the hangar! The doors were open but damn.
