“Grim” would be a good word to Start to describe it.

(I think, more a ‘child of the 50s’ kinda thing.)

I started Kindergarten in 1960.
I distinctly remember hiding under my desk one time.

Do Not get me started on Active Shooter Drills!
As a second grader in 1957 I did many air raid drills, both under the desk and into the fallout shelter. As a high school teacher retiring in 2006 I conducted many active shooter drills. I'll refrain from drawing any conclusions.
 
As an elementary school Teacher, retired in 2016, I’ve held too many whimpering 3rd graders in my arms, at the bottom of a puppy pile, trying to reassure them that there was no danger.:banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::poop:
I remember seeing the movies on what you are supposed to do in a nuke war but never a drill for it. We did do tornado drills which amounted pretty much to the same thing. And of course fire drills which got us out of school work for a little while.:hyper:
