A squad mate in Germany had one and lost the gas cap. Getting one from CONUS took 4 months so he drove it with a rag in the fill tube. We dubbed it the Mobile Molotov.

Oh no! It was prevalent here in the US too. At least in my neck of the woods in the 70s and 80s. Guys too poor or lazy to get a new cap.
