Fizzies seem to be one of those things that disappears and then comes back again every few years.

Fizzies were invented in 1957 by Ruth Millard of the Emerson Drug Company as a spin-off to the Seltzer effervescent drugs.

Lem Billings, a chemist, and vice-president of the Emerson Drug Company, also shares credit for the invention of this pop-drink sensation.

The company figured that they could add flavor to the effervescent drug concept, and eventually, Fizzies came into production in more than six different flavors.

Scientists working for Emerson on the Bromo-Seltzer and Alka-Seltzer effervescent concept came up with the idea of Fizzies when they figured they could market it as a candy concept to children.

This came after Ruth Millard had experimented with adding flavors to the effervescent tablets to disguise the sodium citrate’s bitter, chemical taste in the medicinal tablets.

Not long after she had achieved this wondrous feat, she discovered that children loved the flavors, so the idea for Fizzies was born.

It transpired to be the first time that a drug company had produced a product with absolutely Link Removed whatsoever.

Scientists experimented with adding just the right combinations of sweeteners of cyclamates, citric acid, fruit flavoring, and sodium bicarbonate to produce the Fizzies tablet.

This new concept was introduced in the Baltimore region in 1957.

By the time the 1960s rolled around, the product was being sold nationally, and the fizzy-drink fad exploded onto the American pop-drink scene in seven [This invalid link has been removed]: orange, cherry, grape, lemon-lime, strawberry, [This invalid link has been removed], and cola.

Me and my sister were born '51 and '53 and we remember this product very well from the early 60s. At least several times, I bypassed the glass of water and put the Fizzie directly into my mouth.................that was fun!

I got one like this for Christmas in the early 80’s. Like all grade school boys, my brother and I pretty much recorded nothing but farts with it.

We were so conditioned for Nuclear War as a possibility we played with "Air Defense" like it was a game. Ha!

Get under your desk and hands over your head...that will save you. I still get a weird feeling if I hear one of those old air raid sirens.

To this day, it's one of the eeriest sounds I've ever heard.

I don't know if they still do it but when I lived in Hawaii in the '60's and '70's they still sounded the air raid sirens the first Sunday of the month. Every month since the sneak attack on Pearl Harbor.

I live pretty close to a nuclear generating plant. The first Monday of the month @ 2:00 , they test the sirens. It is pretty weird

They regularly test sirens like that in Japan. Still kinda freaks me out.
