I really wanted one of these back in the early 70s. A local(Miami)shop had one and I started saving up to buy it. Finally had enuff $$$ and went there to get it. Shop closed-as in outta business.
Later met a guy who had had one. According to him, it was just as well I missed it.Now I have an octaver. Much less PITA(no tuning

I have an off brand 8 string and it sounds sweet but I need to play it and get my fingers strengthened up to do a whole set. I always wanted a Hagstrom too. Now that’s a monster.
My son just uses an octave pedal too and it sounds pretty authentic.
Noel Redding played an 8 string Hagstrom with the Jimi Hendrix Experience. I played an 8 string in a 3 piece band and it really does fill in as a 2nd rhythm guitar during leads. Cool ad!

My first octaver was a BOSS OC-2. Sounded good but only 'played' 1octave down, so I hadda play the bass line 'up' and let the box be the bass. Now I use(rarely)an EHX Micro POG, which does 1 up, 1 down, or both(plus the played note)during guitar solos when we go out as 3.
That reminds of the Green Monster that came before it (although it doesn't look "green" in this pic!):
