This was a lot of money in the late 1940s
What Things Cost in 1948:
Car: $1,550
Gasoline: 26 cents/gal
House: $13,500
Bread: 14 cents/loaf
Milk: 86 cents/gal
Postage Stamp: 3 cents
Stock Market: 177
Average Annual Salary: $3,600
Minimum Wage: 40 cents per hour

In 2015 dollars, that would be $5,017.35

Do you mean guys smoking pipes?
Or smoking at work?

I know several guys who smoke tobacco in a pipe.
They also tend to collect pipes, and I know a guy who fixes & restores pipes and another who just started making them.
Me, I don't smoke, although I might if I were on fire.

But if you mean smoking at work, in the office--yeah, that isn't a common sight anymore.

More specifically, I meant a U.S. President smoking a pipe in the Oval Office, without it being a big deal.
