Hard to answer this when he had Fender, MM, and G&L. Each, IMO, are evolutionary steps where he expanded on what he did before.

Leo Fender saved humanity from Double Bass hell. that is all he really did. nothing more,.. certainly nothing less.

He should have put the unlined fretless neck on the jazz bass.

Leo(and his team) produced a bass equivalent that was playable, portable and affordable. It also had to produce sound in a frequency range that could both be supportive and reasonably well amplified by the low performance technology available at the time. If that isn't enough there's also the matter of durability.
There's been plenty of improvement on the original design, I wouldn't want to go back and change anything.

I wish he'd centered the G string pole piece under the G string on the Stingray, which is the cause of the "weak G string" problem on the Ray, IMHO.

Anything that player wanted changed was done by other manufactures. The Pbass cannot be improved on, just like the 55 Belaire, it's built the way God intended.

The only two things he should have done differently are the two things I usually see changed most often: 1. remove those ashtray bridge and pickup covers on all basses (which eventually did get changed) and 2. Include a jazz pickup in the bridge position on every P-bass. This would in no way change the original P sound, just add another dimension to it -- similar to the Aerodyne, IMO the best sounding Fender.

After owning an M2K, I think my dream bass would be an L2K with the 3-band eq from the M2K. Same switches and everything. Perhaps a k-mod as well.

I think Ken(?) on the basses by leo forum essentially outlines that - he put a 3 band in a L series with some switching mods.
