Thinking about a cab build: 2x15 with JBL E130's

you can, take your time.
Roll on finish is easy, tolex is a art and simple once it makes sense, piping is easy just more time.

to practice i just cut a bunch of wood scraps to make a few 8inch wood cubes, rounded them over and used them to practice making the piping channels. then you have a bunch of little boxes to practice wraping with tolex to learn how to cut corners and seams. by the second or third one your ready to go. one night in the garage and about a extra yard of tolex to practice with and #### up. you can do it watch youtube videos....its worth it.
I thought duratex was amazing too...but its the easy way out.

trust me car stereo guys can be total average guys, but they do amazing things with tolex, and watching them do seems and stretch with a heating gun can give you way more confidence its easy anybody can do it.

I'll probably give that a shot sometime but I don't really want to do tolex myself right now. I couldn't even lay it out. I truly do not have the space available here. I'll be building on what small amount of the porch isn't covered in junk. My mother is a hoarder and it's a bit out of control. Maybe I'll try tolex when I've moved back to Columbus.

I stopped in at Jerry's Music in Wausau, WI, and they just got in a few tuck 'n roll Kustoms (and a Vox Essex) in great condition. One has two 15" Altecs...I assume the 140's.

I love my old Altec alnico 418 series II's they are in the original 1972 Ampeg SVT115 cabs they where an optional extra for instead of the usual CTS drivers.
They are like a halfway house between a JBL D130 and K140 love them
To bits they are so clear and agile.

The Altecs would be 421As. I'd buy that in a second. If they aren't Altecs they are JBL D140s. Actually I'd buy either. If my memory serves the upgrade was JBLs. The CTSs were surprisingly smooth and wouldn't get that raw sound that overdriven JBLs were capable of.
