Roll on finish is easy, tolex is a art and simple once it makes sense, piping is easy just more time.
to practice i just cut a bunch of wood scraps to make a few 8inch wood cubes, rounded them over and used them to practice making the piping channels. then you have a bunch of little boxes to practice wraping with tolex to learn how to cut corners and seams. by the second or third one your ready to go. one night in the garage and about a extra yard of tolex to practice with and #### up. you can do it watch youtube videos....its worth it.
I thought duratex was amazing too...but its the easy way out.
trust me car stereo guys can be total average guys, but they do amazing things with tolex, and watching them do seems and stretch with a heating gun can give you way more confidence its easy anybody can do it.
