Thinking about a Sadowsky MV5

HI

Hey Ron. I think you have to rethink your amp, also. Id start with the amp pretty flat eq-wise and the bass in active mode with the bass and treble rolled all the way off(flat actually).

Id go from there. I hardly ever boost treble. I roll up the bass till the bandstand warms up. Thats about it for me. I have an Epifani 502. Depending on the room, I find a mid point I like with that knob and boost the mids ever so slightly. I never boost treble or bass on my amp. Pretty simple, huh

Sometimes when guys try these basses they run them through a setup which is way tweaked for another type bass that lacks whatever. Id try this approach.

oh, another thing. Try one at a gig or rehearsal. Im sure you'll have a different opinon after and good luck

Rob

HI

The pre on the Sadowskys is overly simple. Its just boost. Sounds amazing when the drummer kicks in. I think they sound nothing too special solo'd in my basement. I dont gig in my basement, though. I urge you to borrow one and do a gig. All u will need is to roll up the bass a bit and play. Practically plug n play. Ive owned 20 and none have failed to sound amazing live or to tape

Rob

i think its awesome solo'd in my basement! and sometimes, when the calls are low, i do feel like i only gig in the basement. boo...

Well I'll give it another try.

well, honestly, you didnt like, you didnt like. it happens.

and to my ears, unless you swap out the pickups and change the preamp, the sadowsky wont ever sound like a "natural" jbass. just not in its genes. its a hard charging stag of a jbass, which is why i love mine to pieces.

and what kind of sadowsky thread is this?! no pics?! must i do everything myself! haha

Well then what are you doing that I'm not? I thought I used minimal EQ and tried both pickups. My ears can't be THAT far off.

I may check out an M5-24 while I'm at it and just concede the J stuff to my Lull. I don't have a soapbar equipped bass in the arsenal.

I'll play.... Here is mine too! :D i use a Markbass LMII into an Epifani UL-410 Series 2 and the EQ is set flat. Maybe bass boosted when needed. Sounds killer! The B is huge too!!!!

I have my amp settings all flat. On the bass (w/single coils) a boost bass about 20%, leave treble flat and favor the bridge about pickup slightly (perfect fingerstyle tone). For slap I boost both bass and treble about 20% with both pu's full on. You've GOT to try one with a live band though.

Everyone keeps talking about using one in a band, but I'm very reluctant to buy one and wait for a live setting since I won;t be doing any live music anytime soon. I've been bitten by that already when everyone raved about some of the Bergantino cabs. I bought them based of recommendations and an in-shop audition. I hated them on the gig.

Hi Ron,

I used to own a Lull. It was a great jazz bass that sounded like a great jazz bass. When I first played my Sadowsky, it sounded great, but was quite different than the Lull (as far as variations on the classic jazz bass sound) I wonder if this is why the Sadowsky isn't doing it for you. Once I played it with the band I was sold though!

Wow. Just curious which Bergantino cabs those were? And I hear you. Recommendations are only part of the equation. That said, I bought an F Bass, Nordstrand Nordy, Markbass LMII and Epifani UL310 .... all based on recommendations without ever hearing them first. I've loved every one of those. Guess I got lucky.

The one thing I can't get used to is the Sadowsky chunky neck profile. That is something that no matter how someone describes it, you just have to 'feel' for yourself.

Lastly, when I got my Nordy, it sound pretty darn good alone, but wasn't my sonic Nirvana. Then I took it to the gig and the way it sat in the mix and punched was a bit different from my impression of it alone. I LOVED it in the band mix!

I bought one (a 4 string) without ever hearing one. At first I thought it didn't sound great. But, it was exactly what Rob -Bikeplate said. My amp was eq'ed for a different bass. I came to realize my rack didn't work with my cab. Once I got the Markbass, I heard my Sadowsky for the first time on how it should sound. I quickly bought a 5er after that! With my setup I think the Sadowskys sound great. They have that J tone with a modern edge! The 5 string necks are real comfy too! Of course IMHO :D

I had the Bergantino IP112/HT112 setup with an Alembic F-1X preamp. I'm MUCH happier with the Shroeders.

I want a bass that will sound natural with the EQ serving as frequency adjsutments.

One of the rules of thumbs someone once told me is that a bass has to say "Honey, I'm home" when you play it. That's why I'm leary of buying one hoping that the magic will show up during a gig.

Why? If you buy from Roger direct you get 7 days to make up your mind.

I find the sadowsky neck to be the most comfortable I have played, with Ken Smiths being a close second. I've had my grubby mitts on alot of basses too.. I have played F's before, and I do like those as well.

To me, excellent at-home tone does not translate well to excellent at-gig tone. This has bitten me a few times, when I buy a bass because I love the tone at home or in the shop, but it just gets lost at the gig.
