Thinking about getting a delay...

I want to get a fun pedal, a delay would not be particularly useful to me but I think it will be fun and spur some creativity. I am sort of leaning towards the tc electronic flashback, does anyone have any experience with it, or could anyone suggest a better/different delay. Do you think it would be worth it to get the flashback x4 over the standard flashback?

Devil's advocate: I never could see much sense in delays or reverbs on bass guitar. If I wanted something that would be fun and spur creativity I'd get something synthy. Maybe a Boss SYB-5 or (probably more useful) a Source Audio Multiwave distortion.

I have a standard Flashback, and really enjoy it. All of the different delays sound good, some can get pretty modulated and cool sounding. Really like the Tape setting. The looper function is easy to learn and works pretty well.

The "tap tempo" system on it is kind've weird but works well IMO. If you're not sure on whether you like delay I don't think I'd take the pluge on the X4.

Ive had a few including the TC repeater which was sooo big that I let it go... Really nice tho. The other was a joyo cc clone which didnt last. I've been interested in the muza fd900 to throw in a loop. I like them for fun too, but don't want to spend a lot.

Haven't tried that one yet, but since you are checking out some stuff, you should definitely check out the Empress Super Delay and the Pigtronix Phi Ecolution - I have these and they are super fun to mess around with. I personally also like my DL-4 - loads of fun and options, especially if you have a continuous controller and sound quality is pretty good too (opinion). I also use DD-3 which is fun because you can hold a note and tweak the delay time to create a theramin type sound. I also use the DD-5 and the DD-7 for the ability to tap, but the DD-7 has some extra sounds.

Just so you know, I use these pedals for anything from bass to flute to sax to voice live and just for creating.

The Boss DD-7 is an excellent delay and can be found pretty cheap used.

If you can find one the TC Electronics Nova Delay iB Modified is great, albeit more expensive.

I have the Flashback and I LOVE it! I've owned a DL4 and an Echo Park, too. I'd have to say that the Flashback and the Echo Park are the best bang-for-your-buck delays of their price range. Check out the Echo Park, if you haven't already.

I have an EHX Memory Boy Deluxe that I personally really enjoy. Analog delay with tap tempo. Really fun. And, if you ever end up with a Hot Hand 3 from Source Audio, you can control it with the wireless ring.

if you don't have a multi-effect unit,..I'd recommend something like a ZOOM B3 which has very good delay effects along with many other decent effects which will enhance the delay.

Maybe I'm reading this wrong, but if you wanna spur creativity, I'd go with a looper like a Boss RC3 or a Digitech JamMan. This will allow you to record phrases with and play over it, with whatever instrument you want. The Digitech comes with software allowing for storing and managing phrases. Quality-wise, they are about equal (I've had both, still own the JM), although the JamMan's pedal doesn't seem as sturdy as the Boss unit. I'm considering the upper-scale Stereo, when budget allows it.

For fun, well... an evelope filter comes to mind. I have a Digitech Bass Synth Wah that I use as a very credible octave pedal, but it has 2 decent filter modes, plus a boat-load of wacky sounds. I'm sure others will chime in with other options as well... ring modulator maybe ?

Should you stick with the delay option, the Boss DD7, as previously mentionned, offers a lot of possibilities and quality-wise.... well it's a Boss. We might not all like the Boss sound, but the units are unkillable. Plus, it has a looping function, short, but still.

I love the GreenHouse delay as I only use delay on occasions, it sounds great, and has a tiny footprint.
I did not want a delay that took up too much room and did not want to compromise on quality.
Love it, great pedal for the price IMO

I haven't played the tc electronic flashback, but it looks sweet, has several settings, it's true bypass, and it's got a loop function.
I have the boss DD-7 and I love it, it's the same price range as that flashback, several settings, loop function, it's not true bypass, but it has the extra jack for a tap tempo pedal which IMO is very good to have. Don't buy a tap tempo pedal, you can build one from radio shack parts for $15, or build a nice one for about $20, rather than buy the boss brand tap tempo for $40. The loop function is pretty great and I think you will find it to be fun and spur some creativity. I bought my digitech jamman because I wanted to explore looping more because of the DD-7. Delay and/or lopping are very fun to play with. Get into it and enjoy the ride in outerspace delays.

As always, I advocate Echo Park. Easiest tap tempo on the fly IMO once you get the hang of it. And sounds gorgeous with great modulation (tape mode ftw). Great swells in it too.

Delay is kinda boring by itself, I must admit. Combine it with a detune effect, or flanger, or even a bit crusher, and you begin to get all sorts of interesting new sounds.

This is why I prefer delays with some built in modulation. I've used the EHX deluxe memory man and the Skreddy Echo to fit that bill.
