Thinking about getting a delay...

A delay pedal with an FX loop would be convenient. There are a few on the market.

My thinking is get the delay now and later get a chorus, maybe even the bh250.

The Boss DD-7 is an excellent delay and can be found pretty cheap used.

If you can find one the TC Electronics Nova Delay iB Modified is great, albeit more expensive.

+1 to DD-7. I was just messing around with mine last night (picked it up for $90, I think). Delay might not be the most practical effect, but it's a lot of fun and can make anything sound good. Last night, I had it set on analog mode with a long delay and a lot of feedback (7 or 8 repeats). Noodled to my heart's content and realized that an hour and a half had gone by.

On bass, I prefer a digital delay, and preferably one that doesn't try to emulate analog delays and their lossy nature. There are gobs of inexpensive-but-good delays to choose from. It is hard to find a really bad one.

tried several "analog delay" and what they did was adding a bit of a noisy "swoosh", which is bad for my band

decided to go with DD-3 and I'm happy. I use it sparingly (Effect knob & Feedback knob both on 10 o'clock) in Mode 3 to add some spice in several passages of the songs

Devil's advocate: I never could see much sense in delays or reverbs on bass guitar. If I wanted something that would be fun and spur creativity I'd get something synthy. Maybe a Boss SYB-5 or (probably more useful) a Source Audio Multiwave distortion.

wow never could see much sense in a delay on bass? Ever hear of Roger Waters?...lol

I have the MXR Carbon Copy It's nice and warm and easy to use....i second it since punisher911 brought it up first!

For completely with "fun and spur creativity", plan on getting one of each of the major effects you often see discussed here:
1. Chorus
2. Flanger
3. Phaser
4. Delay
5. Tremolo
6. Vibrato
7. Synth
8. Octave
9. Bit Crusher

Pick up one or two Boss LS-2 blenders and off you go.

Get a TC Flashback delay and you will get a bunch of different delays and a chorus (mod delay or Tri Chorus toneprint)
