I opened up the strat bodies by mistake today....now I am pissed! you would think they could have a couple more pages in their jazz bass showcase! If there is any combo you are wondering what your custom jazz body would look like....I bet you anything you can find it in the strat body showcase!

To fret or not to fret? Yes, I know it's a nebulous question whose answer is completely subject to personal preference. But basically, I'm leaning toward a lined fretless neck with a gloss finish to protect the wood. Would something like that sound good in rock 'n roll/metal? Would the slap-pop have enough twang with the strings so low?

If I go with fretting, I'm thinking 6230 (small/vintage fretwire). Since it doesn't lift the string up much, will it create more buzzing? Any recordings I could listen to where the bassist is playing on a vintage tinywire neck?

As always, any thoughts are appreciated.

Slapping on fretless? Probably not.
Vintage frets won't buzz more than regular frets, as far as I know, unless they are not level. They sound different though than jumbos. Tried vintage frets, been there, done that.

Kicking around this idea for a build (first time), and would like to hear everyone's suggestions / thoughts / 2cents . . .

Warmoth JBass, Bartolini MM (bridge), Fender (MIM) PBass Neck . . .

Keeping it simple, the unfinished body comes in at like $255 for Walnut, and $185 for Alder.

Is there a type of wood that would be great for this setup that I wouldn't need to finish? I figure I could save some money that way, and still have a great looking bass . . .

Not sure if I could stain/finish the body myself for cheap . . .

I was going to do a Bartolini MM and preamp with some switches (or whatever I needed) for controls . . .

I figured I could snag a cheap MIM neck (either J or P) from ebay, to finish it off.

Anyone have body wood or finish recommendations, as well as thoughts on electronics, or controls?

I sent them an email and they replied they could do it without any problem but they don't list P's as a pickup rout for the Gecko5 series. Not always. I recently asked them to make me a 72 P Bass body with a route for a single coil P Bass pickup and they refused. Would have had to order a 54 body, but then they couldn't tell me if the 72 pickguard would fit just the same on the 54 Body with the single coil route. I emailed back and asked their customer service guy Ronnie Norell if he could just go into the warehouse and see if they lined up OK and stated I understood I would have to modify the pickguard to clear the pickup, but he flat out refused. Left me pretty unimpressed with Warmoth, I wound up going with B. Hefner for a one piece Swap Ash custom body, Ebay for a Squire VM Telecaster Bass neck, and WD Music for a custom pickguard.

I assume for a 4 string? Just FYI I try to find 5 string Deluxe V bodies under 4lbs 9 oz if possible. I assume the 4 string J bass bodies (for 20 fret necks) are full size but I have no direct experience.

If you wanna save some money on your finish, try something like Formby's or TruOil. You can wipe it on, it's cheap, and you can use as many or as few coats as you like.

Walnut is gonna be heavy. I'd suggest Alder or Swamp Ash if you want to keep the weight down.

"WHAT FINISHING MATERIALS DO WE USE?

Urethane is our primary finishing material though we do use several thin coats of polyester as a base coat to fill the wood grain. The process is first to fill the grain, then the color coat is applied. Finally the top coats are laid down before final sanding and buffing. If the body is dyed, these colors are put on the raw wood prior to the base coat application. There seems to be much controversy about finishing materials and poly seems much maligned...Without sinking into the depths of this debate, let us just say that our finishes seldom exceed twelve thousandths on an inch in thickness. For the lacquer fans, there are others that spray this material though the cost is generally at least double for a very questionable sonic difference."

I think warmoth does indeed have plans for s 2+2 for their shortscale bodies but like I said in your thread my Single cut does not dive at all , even with a heavier neck . I think the slightly heavier body and the lightweight tuners counter it . I have some standard scale instruments that have more dive going on .I think it could happen though if say you were to get a feather weight body with a heavier neck , like Wenge or Padouk you could run into that problem .
