thinking of having bass defretted

Get an inexpensive fretless bass. It'll probably run you the same cost, if not less, and if you end up not liking it, you can go back.
When I owned a six string bass, I wanted to defret after seeing Steve Bailey play. I eventually grew to dislike his sound. I didn't ever save the money for the job, which saved me because when I eventually sold the bass off last year, I only lost $130 off the sale. Woulda been a lot more had I modded it.
