Thinning the herd, What would you keep ?

So it’s time to thin the herd a bit. I have 7 basses that I may or may not sell. I still have all of the regular players separated out. I thought it would be interesting to see what everyone’s opinions would be, as which to keep or sell and why.

#1- 2016 Fender USA P-5 Standard Maple Black w/ Tort guard
#2- 2011 Fender USA PJ-4 Deluxe 60th Aniversary Sunburst w/ Black Guard
#3- 2010 Ibanez SR-500 Mahogany
#4- 2007 Lakland Korean 44-01 Natural
#5- 2001 Fender USA P-4 Standard Rosewood Black w/ Tort Guard
#6- 1998 Fender MIJ Jazz 24 Flame Maple Burst
#7- 1991 Fender MIM P-4 Standard CAR w/ Black Guard (63 vintage p/u, Badass)

So let’s hear your thoughts.

TOP 5 Standard TalkBass answers:

5. Sell the Ibby and Lakland, you only need Fenders.
4. Only 7 basses? Way under quota, keep them all and buy more.
3. Keep the ones with Tort Guard, burn the rest.
2. Please list the weight of each bass, along with pictures, and sound samples. Can't help you until this is done.
1. NO PICS NO BASSES NO ADVICE!

Just helping to expedite more constructive advice in subsequent replies.
It would be useful to know "regular players", since these could all be redundant basses you plan to sell.

The keepers are-
Lakland 55-02
Lakland 44-64 Custom
Fender USA 57 AVRI Roasted

Of the 7 listed, all the Fenders are set up a little different. Safe bet the Ibby and the Lakland will go. I’m just thinking of getting something new, so a few things must go. Also thought it would be fun to get the TB opinions going

Keep the Jazz because, well, even if it’s not your main bass, it’s such a classic; they’re nice to play, nice to look at and they have lots of classic sounds that fit the ticket in numerous genres, etc. Or replace it with another Jazz you like more if you don’t love that one.

If you’re really into 5 strings, keep the one more 5 string (that P-5, unless you’re not into that particular bass, in which case get rid of it and get a second 5 you like more). If you’re not so into 5 strings that you need two of them, get rid of the P-5.

If you find PJs particularly useful or intruigingly potentially useful, keep the PJ. If not, get rid of it.

You already said that you’ll probably get rid of the Ibby and the Korean Lakland. Get rid of them.

Besides a Jazz, keep the 3 keepers you mentioned (55-02, 44-64, 57 AVRI), and, aside from the possible exceptions mentioned above, just get rid of the rest

Now that I see your keepers list , I would sell them all.

You have multiple P basses. Everyone needs a good P bass. If your house was on fire, all you had was the P’s, and you only had time to grab one of them before the roof collapsed...

The one you’d grab in that scenario is a keeper.

The second keeper is the one that sounds the least like a P.

If you want to keep 3, the third would be the one that complements the other 2. Two basses that are similar? ditch one.

My approach is to cover as much territory as I can with relatively few basses.

+1

I'd keep the two basses you play the most and sell the rest. When I had a clear out I sold the 4 basses that lived in their cases and kept the two basses I gigged, a Mike Lull PJ5 and a Sadowsky RV5 Jazz. One of each just covers everything for me.
