This guy is a monster

This man is great!

No double thumping? Take the lessions with Ant Wellington (Vic Wootens bassist after all) at Link Removed and learn that open string hammer-ons, doule thumps and flams are all part of this technique.

But to say it in Jeff Berlins words: it's always easier to write 1000 silly postings in a forum than to actually play what you're talking about.

That was terrible. It wasn't double thumping, BTW, it was open hammer thumping. Much different techniques. The timing, tone, and technique were all bad. I would be interested (and surprised) to see where in print or on video you saw Dennis Chambers say that this guy was one of his favorite bassists to work with. Dennis has worked with everybody, and there is no way this guy is anywhere near the top. I know people are saying that maybe THIS clip was just bad, but if he was that good, there wouldn't be a clip that bad!

I've never heard of open hammer thumping, and niether has google, show me a webpage with this technique demonstration? Dennis says what I said in the DVD.

You need to check out Victor Lemente Wooten... Now there's a winner. No rip on the bass player in the video, I like Fodera too!!!

I think Victor makes some of the most boring and cheesyist songs ever, also I think his tone sucks, and that he is a fretboard wanker. ;)

Not a decent discussion, you and someone else brought it down with dumb negative comments, in my opinion. And I didn't really ask for an opinion on the bassist, I just wanted to know how he was playing what he was playing, and eventually someone come up with it, but it still appears a mystery. Anyway, it is a shame to give such bad comments on an obviously brilliant virtuoso, but then the opinion of some internet nobody doesn't matter at the end of the day, because they still have go back to their boring 9-5 jobs everyday, while the people they are slagging off are making a living from playing bass. :)

Don't be so sad, joeyzaza!
I'm on your side and I posted this link to Tetsuo Sakurai over here in our largest European forum. People over here are generally more open to new input.

As far as his technique is concerned, it's really nothing magical. When taken apart slowly it's just thump up/down openstring hammer-on flams.
If you manage to watch Ant Wellington playing at full speed you will see him hardly moving. It's all about economical playing.

Just go to Link Removed you'll find your answers there :ninja:

Are you a chef? No? Does that mean you don't have the right to say you don't like the taste of your food if it comes to your table and you think it tastes like crap?

This is getting out of control.

Yes, it gets old when people cut down other players in the open forum.

Yes, we all know what is perfect for every situation, the perfect amount of taste, style, flash.... So much so that most of us never do it ourselves. Get over yourselves. When you sit down with Mr. Chambers, post it on google video so we can all say how much you should have played behind beat 2 a little further in your two handed tap/slap solo. Anyway, that's what I would have done.

Wow. I didn't know google was the haven for all things bass related! Open hammer pluck can be seen here ON VICTOR WOOTEN'S SITE!

And to clarify, I don't see this guy double thumb one time. The only thing I see or hear him do is open hammer. I can do both, and have learned to recognize the difference.

Well, for one, I didn't say you weren't entitled to your opinion, but I have the right to call it dumb if I want to, and I don't recommend telling the chef his food is crap, unless you don't plan on sticking around while he "prepares" another meal, but you can be assured of a few things, he doesn't care, the person who grew the food doesn't care, the food doesn't care, no one else in the restaurant cares, and at the end of the day, you've had a bad meal, and there's nothing in the world that's going to change that, so you might aswell just keep your negative opinion of the food to yourself for all the good it will do, and just aviod that restaurant in future. :)

Somehow I think Bryan's analogy went waaaaay over your head.

I have a right to think that of course. It's in the rules;)

I see what you mean by wanking, but I what I find funny, is that jazzers will label a guitarist like Joe Satriani or Steve Vai, or at least some of their playing, as wanking, but when John McLaughlin or Al Di Meola does the same thing with a clean tone over jazz chords, it's something else all of a sudden. Lol :hmm:
Joey, please don't EVER compare McLaughlin to those other wankers, okay?! ;)

But still...I'm serious:eyebrow:

Sakurai's a great player who's been at this for years and can pretty much do it all. Yeah, this isn't the best material to see him in action, but there's no reason to dismiss him as a "wanker" simply because he's playing GREG HOWE's music.

As far as joeyzaza's original technical question goes, it's old-school slap pop. If you want that speed... practice.

He's not playing Greg Howe's music, that's one of his own tunes, Greg only plays one of his tunes on the DVD, along with another, which is just another cover of Proto Cosmos. As for the technique, you're saying it's something else than what the other guy said, who is right and who is wrong?

The amount of people argueing here is unbelievable. First of all the dude just wanted to know how he was slapping so fast. No one asked for opinions. Secondly, I agree that the clip was nothing special and the tone wasnt great but when somone here shows me a clip of themselves doing the same thing then I will listen to them when they talk about that bass player as if he is below them. (I would also like to make a personal opinion that I think speedslapping is a very overused and overated form of playing and I wish bassists would stop trying to slap 500 notes a second just to look like they are impressive. It doesn't suit most styles of music and it causes the bass to sound less melodic which in my opinion makes lead playing quite dull and repetitive. There are some great bass solos which don't use slapping. Look at Teen Town or any other WR stuff. Jaco rarely uses slapping and he is quite possibly the most musically talented bassist ever) By the way I'm not saying I know a lot about music. I'm just a noobie compared to most people here but calling that video crap is a bit much considering I could find a handful of bassists who couldn't play that. I'm not saying musically its a great piece and as I said earlier I am not a huge fan of speedslapping but it takes skill to do that and I would be willing to bet money that if i went up to 1000 people on the street and asked them to play something as impressive as that, I wouldn't get a lot of people who could. Anyway I'm done now so feel free to flame me all you like, as I said I'm not claiming to be an expert it's just a personal opinion.
