This guy is a monster

Marcus Alan said:
Holy crap, you guys have something bad to say about everything. It's unbelievable!

That guy is a nasty player, and that video is pretty cool.

So this thread is about EVERYTHING?

Sweet. I had no idea... I thought it was about the guy in the clip.

:hiding:

Based on that video alone, I came to the exact opposite conclusion. Obviously you like that kind of stuff while many don't.

This is the best thread I've seen on TB for a while - mainly thanks to your answers Brad - I think we should even make this a 'Sticky' because it again sums up the whole internet paradigm and it's mainy ironic but valued / flawed but brilliant aspects.

As for as the playing in the video goes I hated it - the whole band was wanking on mass in a a horrid fusion orgy - ewwww!

Dennis Chambers should know better but he obviously doesn't and the guy's slapping was very poor - though I agree with the points made earlier about bitching about these guys while they are out touring the world and we sit in our offices / bedrooms / internet cafes etc typing crap - but hey this is a forum for discussion...long may it last.

Cheers

Mike

I like shreds like that maybe as a solo but as a main riff just not my thing. I feel like all that is is a speed and movement exercise, all the soul dhas completely been removed from that. I bet the guy has the know how to get a good soulful sound though. I'd take Grahm Central Stations the Jam slap bass line anyday over that one!

Not a decent discussion, you and someone else brought it down with dumb negative comments, in my opinion. And I didn't really ask for an opinion on the bassist, I just wanted to know how he was playing what he was playing, and eventually someone come up with it, but it still appears a mystery. Anyway, it is a shame to give such bad comments on an obviously brilliant virtuoso, but then the opinion of some internet nobody doesn't matter at the end of the day, because they still have go back to their boring 9-5 jobs everyday, while the people they are slagging off are making a living from playing bass. :)

Aren't you slagging off Victor Wooten?

I think Victor makes some of the most boring and cheesyist songs ever, also I think his tone sucks, and that he is a fretboard wanker.

I'm probably one of the busier part-time bassists around:D

BTW I'm not complaining, I just didn't care for what he did. At all. It was like a NAMM flashback;)

I also agree that just because Dennis is there doesn't make it okay.

I must say i must be really surprised to some guys commenting about Tetsuo Sakurai's lousy time and technique in this video.

After watching, i truly agree this must be one of his worse ever. I remember listening to Casiopea when i was just getting into jazz, and so call fusion stuff. Its was a technically difficult but also melodic japanese band... and from it came JIMSAKU; akira jimbo and tetsuo sakurai.

I think he was one of the first few to do drum and bass solos. with the bass doing tapping and melodic playing at the same time; no overdubs. This was way before victor wooten's name was ever mentioned. I think you guys should try and get this and reserve your thoughts on this amazing japanese bassist. I do think that in this video, all of them were kinda "wanking" and having fun, just too bad it didnt turn out "right". IMO his slapping on the 6 is one of the cleanest and style closest to a 4.

here's some of his other videos with Casiopea. Some of the solo motif is lame by this decade but just keep in mind this was in the 70s/80s

He may be a crazy bassist, but the music is just so damn cheesy. The keyboard in the background.... the constant guitar shredding....

I see no beauty in this kind of music... there's nothing to draw me in... And imo, you can be the best bassist in the world, but if you don't write good music, you might as well not even bother.

edit: the stuff that brandonwong posted is much better... but i still wouldn't kick back and listen to it in my free time... i dunno, it might just be me, but i find it to be very boring.

+1

I took no fancy to his Greg Howe stuff.
I think he did wrote "better" music before... or maybe its just a change in his musical timeline.

It a matter of taste or opinion. eg. i prefer Herbie Hancock's old school than his new DJ stuff, even if Matt Garrison is backing him.

Nothing is ever good enough for anyone around here. I mean, let's face it, to say the people on this site are a tough crowd, is like saying Yao Ming is "kinda" tall...:hiding:

I didnt read this whole thread, but the video was almost unbearably bad. Not that I could do that stuff. I can't. As far as out of time? Who can tell? I couldn't even make out any individual notes.
Techincally, I suppose it's impressive, but wankery for the sake of wankery leaves me cold. I even had a few Greg Howe cassettes (and that dates when that was), and I appreciate his playing, but ehh....not for me.

Just beacuse you play with Dennis Chambers doesn't mean you are a great player. I saw a guitarist at Blues Alley in DC who completely sucked. His rhythm section was Matt Garrison and Dennis Chambers. Matt and Dennis sounded great but the poor guitar player was in way over his head.
