This guy is a monster

Some stuff is just fun to watch or do for the sake of technique , other times it is a simple line that has magic of groove and emotion. Very subjective stuff, but in general I agree with west coast bass, we should treat other players with respect at least for the work it takes to do what ever they are good at.

So on that note, fun to watch, music ganre is not my cup of tea though" he's got a nice bass....

I am a big fan of Victor and Flecktones in general, I think it is music itself, Victor plays stuff that is easy to relate to somehow, feel the beat and melody, and it surprises me with his choices of notes or technique to copliment melody or groove, makes it interesting to follow and listen to.

This example seemed technical but not very musical overall, thats my opinion. L Armstrong said that if the music makes you tap your foot to it it is good music. In other words if you connect with it or feel it.

Even Victor has some solo pieces that get out of hand as far as technique goes but I think he does it on purpose to please his musician fans that want that.

I am often astonished at Stanley Clarkes ability to balance all of the above.

Do we learn technique to play music or do we practice technique untill it is somewhat musical? Retorical question?
I might post it in a new thread....

trying to please the musician fans is maybe what Sakuri the Bassist was doing.

one thing I've noticed is that I've seen my share of the house hold names give incredible performances and I have seen most of the same incredible Bassist just have what may be a bad day(remember we are human)but no one rags on them but this one Bassist in the clip (Tetsuo Sakuri)is not known by a lot of tb members(and that's not a bad thing)and for what ever reason he's just not given the same respect. It really comes down to A** kissing in most cases,I have also seen guys rag on the house hold names but when they meet this player that they say they hate it turns into OH man(or girl)you are my favorite Bass player I have all your CD's etc and with some of these Kat's I have witnessed this because I was doing the introducing.

I see what you mean by wanking, but I what I find funny, is that jazzers will label a guitarist like Joe Satriani or Steve Vai, or at least some of their playing, as wanking, but when John McLaughlin or Al Di Meola does the same thing with a clean tone over jazz chords, it's something else all of a sudden. Lol :hmm:

I find it funny that you would use a word like "jazzer". :p

I would like to come across as mature about this, but I can't. I am sorry but I have to say Al Di Meola has made some of the most boring guitar music ever.

I disagree about McLaughlin completely though.
