I'm totally done with fans. If there is a fan, usually you hear it in a quiet practice room. I have previously sold amps for their irritatingly noisy fans. Banished forever. My Shuttle 3.0 has no fan. Dead silent. Love it.

I nearly bought one way back, but I wasn't quite ready for class D.

If the current music project was a moderately loud rock band it would be fine, but the Ashdown purchase predated knowing the nature of the project. So I now have some regrets about finally making a move and perhaps not picking the best option because of one factor.

But the best I can find on the used market is a Mercedes-Benz steering rack.

The Subway D-350 is fanless and there are quite a few members using it for surprisingly large gigs.

It's where my music money has gone. But they needed it. Their illnesses all fell into areas not covered by the pet insurance. In one case because I swapped insurers and there was a two week blackout in claims with the new policy which is when emergency life saving surgery was required for a previously unknown medical condition. They are amazing creatures, though.

I have had a good experience with a BAM200 this time around using it daily in the studio and now 2 3+ hour gigs with a not too loud and not too quiet jazz group into a 1x15. It is plenty of power for this gig but for a louder situation I would want more power.

I had one of the batch a couple of years ago that failed in short order so I am being sure to put this one through the paces, and have a backup at gigs for now. I have a GK MB500 that has been flawless but I have to be careful as this is a lot of power for the cab I'm using.

The news from Ashdown: feel free to try it, them amp may experience thermal shut down. I can't really try it at gig volume at home for an hour to test, or at sweaty club temperatures, although I prefer mu clubs less sweaty (thank goodness they are not smoky these days). Given how bad my hayfever has been this year I might have to confine gigging to winter anyway :)

But will they cover it under warranty if it fails?

Yeah, it’s easy to make a (questionable in my opinion) recommendation when you aren’t on the hook for repairing any damage that might occur.

I've taken the expedient of asking my wife (she has super sensitive hearing) and turned on the amp at idle along with conversation level YouTube. With that she says the fan noise isn't intrusive. So that suggests in a gig situation it's only going to be an issue if the audience is very polite and keeps quiet, except in the situation where the amp has been working hard first. I haven't had it into the practice space (I have a totally silent combo there at present) to crank it up as yet, but will do so.

I also tweaked a little noise out of the system with some rubber washers, although that means there's not a perfect seal (by 0.5mm) between the fan and rear plate.

I wish Ashdown had used Molex push connectors, but I'll solder one onto the leads from the PCB and one onto the fan so I can potentially change the fan out later for further experimentation if I feel the need.
