Reggie Parker is certainly a man from my generation, who us rooted in the funk. He is definitely throwing some shade at the young dudes who play tricky fills every other bar instead of keeping things tight. The best of the young guys can play the fills and runs while grooving, just like Anthony Jackson used to do. The problem is that most players don't have the skill to pull it off musically.

I wasn't familiar with Reggie Parker, because of this thread I fell down the youtube rabbit hole, great stuff! I really dig some of the stuff he does with his left thumb on the E string.
He is distinctive and very good. YouTube is great because it exposes us to great players we would not know otherwise.

I finally listened to this clip. Dude is a great player. He's cocky, but in a good way. I love his advice about being yourself, and not being shy. I also think his advice about not running after every trend is great too. He is a great player who worked with one of Gospel's major artists using a four string Pensa Jazz. He was right, why change basses? HE is the one with the great gig! I have said for a while, there are a lot of great basses around. Contentment with gear is largely a state of mind. Get a bass that works for you and practice! And as you practice, be comfortable with who you are! I'm glad I started this thread. Even though I am closer to the end than the beginning, I still appreciate Brother Parker's words of wisdom.

He doesnt just lay down a groove, he beats into submission. Great playing. Classic gospel funk style.

Many young bassists lack the musicality of an old school bassist like Reggie Parker. Long fills and runs do not equal high musicality.
I've checked out many Reggie Parker videos over the years on YouTube. He is a great funky bass player.

He reminds me of Marcus Miller in that he is really connected to a particular bass. My biggest regret was getting head over heels into gear, instead of sticking with a bass and just practicing my butt off!
I can truly relate to his "groove style" of playing. He plays very smoothly and has some very nice melodic licks throughout. I have listened to Hezekiah Walker's gospel for years and never knew who the bass player was. Reggie Parker's bass playing is so rock solid and his groove is so tight...you can't help but be drawn into his bass playing style. Interestingly, I find that my interpretation, and approach to gospel music shares some of his dynamics and vision.
