This is UNREAL (absurd Akai Deep Impact content)

Since its a digital pedal, a clone is impossible unless you could get ahold of the source code.

Not exactly impossible. Those of us with digital capability could recreate the sounds by coding it from scratch, but it would be too large an undertaking to be worth it considering how few would sell.

But you're right that a schematic would be useless.

Well yeah, you could just code your own to do something similar. It probably wouldn't qualify as a "clone" in that case. It would be a fun programming project though.

its up to $1000. wow.

IMO, your MUCH better off with a G5. it sounds better. it tracks better. its easier to use. it has more to offer than a DI.

there was a time when i sold my G5 for a deep impact, for the size / bypass. sold the deep impact, and have always wished i had the G5 back.

my impression with the deep impact always was (and i do love the thing, dont get me wrong, i did pay $500 for mine) that it was a $100 pedal when it was new, and thats how it sounds/behaves; like a $100 pedal. but some of the sounds are really cool. where as the G5 actually sounds/behaves like an awesome synth.

looking back, if i saw a deep impact for sale for $250 i dont think i'd buy it. (not to use anyway.. to resell for $1000, sure.) i'd pay pretty much anything for another G5..

the trick with rare effects is to find stuff that doesn't have someone famous using it. once someone famous uses it, the price shoots way up. the bass whammy would be worth $100 used if it wasn't for justin chancellor, for example.

It's embarrassing to admit, but I'd say a good portion of why I want the Deep Impact (aside from the cosmic journey of funk) is because of Mike Gordon; I saw him here in Nashville and spoke with him after the show. I explained to him how his Deep Impact was essentially a "mind blower". He initially thought I was talking about his new Kaossilator, but then said how he really liked the sounds of the Deep Impact but it was cheaply made - I guess he's broken a few.

And there you go. I am simply not going to care anymore about the hype, be happy with what I have, and worry about getting a Deep Impact when one falls in my lap or when the hype dies. (or the perfect synth pedal comes around)

So, for those of you with experience on both -

What makes a Deep Impact so much better than an Octavius Squeezer, Piggie Mothership, EHX BMS, etc...

You know for a grand there are a quite a few rack synths and a few table tops like the Dave Smith Mopho that with with a MIDI pickup or other means should be able to kick the DIs a$$...

I only have experience with the BMS, cheapies (SYB 5,BSW) and my little phatty, but just seems much ado about nothing.

I've played a BMS. While I have not played the latter, it and the DI are as good as unrelated, tonally.

The Pigtronix Mothership is horrible on bass, purportedly. See for yourself.

Also no experience with the Squeezer. I will say that, from all I can tell, the DI is very much a cheez-making box. Lots of the 80s synth tones. I'm sure rack units could blow it out of the water, especially those around the $1000 price range, but the original point of the DI was to have those sounds available in a fairly low price range in stompbox format, I think. It nailed that objective with gusto in its day.

If someone were ambitious enough to take a shot at it, the Line 6 Tonecore Developer Kit might be a possibility. But you will need to learn assembly language to get anywhere with that.

Nah, it's not a very good language and it will not be supported much longer. There are several much better options for hardware.

 !

My Deep Impact has been sitting on the floor of my 'music room' unused for the last 6 months or so... Think I might dust it off and put it in the cupboard for safer keeping!

Likewise. I don't actually like the vast majority of the sounds it can produce and probably wouldn't ever have a need for it.

But every time I've sold a pedal I've regretted it and I don't especially need the money right now so I might as well hang onto it. In case I change my mind.

Yeah, the majority of the sounds are pretty cheesy...

I tend to sell gear that is still available or easily obtained. If I sold my Deep Impact it would be gone forever because there is absolutely no way I would spend the kind of money that this current one is going for. They simply aren't that great.

I have all but the Mothership and if I could choose just one, I'd choose the DI.

I feel the opposite to Grooooove re the G5 vs the DI. The DI feels well made to me whereas the G5 has awful bypass and takes up a boat-load of real estate for (essentially) a good sawtooth wave.

Hopefully no fool bought it off you for that much ;)

Btw I don't think Chris' wife would enjoy him banging models much :p

As my ongoing search for a decently priced DI continues, it seems I've become akin to searching various websites each day, perhaps several times a day, hoping that one will pop up at a reasonable price and the person selling will not know what they have (so close before!). After viewing this eBay auction, I am certain I will (happily) stick with my mammoth-sized G5 and just sit back. I can't compete with this sort of money:
http://cgi.ebay.com/AKAI-DEEP-IMPACT-SB1-SB-1-BASS-SYNTH-PEDAL-RARE-MUSE_W0QQitemZ290419488782QQcmdZViewItemQQptZGuitar_Accessories?hash=item439e59b80e#ht_1531wt_1167

If you have a Deep Impact and are on the fence of selling it or not, it seems NOW is the time.

Have any of you EVER seen a Deep Impact go THIS high in price?

I was in the same situation as you are.
Looking ebay, forums and sites looking for one DI at a decent price.
Almost won an auction (lost by 1£ :crying:)
Last week I found one at a decent price and was lucky to be the first to see it. Contacted the seller and made the deal. This only happened because I was ALWAYS looking the web for it. So keep on trying.

This ebay auction is ridiculous. I don't believe the winner will pay this kind of money. If you look at the bid history, someone bidded $801 when it was at $152:eyebrow:

Economy speculation?

Cheers,

Pedro
