As my ongoing search for a decently priced DI continues, it seems I've become akin to searching various websites each day, perhaps several times a day, hoping that one will pop up at a reasonable price and the person selling will not know what they have (so close before!). After viewing this eBay auction, I am certain I will (happily) stick with my mammoth-sized G5 and just sit back. I can't compete with this sort of money:

I didn't bother to click the link. Is it the one that is $700? I saw one on the bay for $800 a couple months ago.

I've always wanted a Deep Impact. I suppose the discontinued angle makes me want it more, but I refuse to pay current market prices. By that, I mean over $200. I mean, come on.

I know that the Deep Impact being in demand is really a distortion of reality - niche market, and all that. Still, Akai COULD rerelease it if they wanted to. And I would buy one from Musician's Friend for $179.

That won't happen, but those are my thoughts. Those are my terms.

If I had one for sale, would I accept top dollar for it? I suppose. On the other hand, if it was really worth that much, maybe it would be good enough to keep. I wish I had a warehouse full of them to sell at rock bottom prices, thus driving the market back to normal levels.

Dann, you mentioned the G5, which I always hear is rare and goes for $300+. But timing and patience really pays off for those. I've narrowly missed out on some GREAT eBay deals on G5's. I've seen dry spells and gouge-fests. Not so with the DI.

Precisely. I've seen a small handful of eBay G5's in the past 6 or so months go for anywhere between 100-300. I got mine from a TBer for 300, and it really is great - expensive, but great. The deep impact is nice because it is more pedal-board friendly, but I could care less at these prices.




I still cannot get over this.

I know a little, but not a lot about the policy change(es). Could you eleborate on your statement?

Also, I don't want this thread to get totally hijacked. If the eBay discussion gets lengthy, we can start another thread. I'll happily follow.

You would think so, but we on Talkbass probably don't see the "big picture". I know this has been discussed many times on these forums. WE are a "drop in the bucket" in the grand scheme of things.

I read lots of posts on different forums about "Why did they drop this" or "change that" or "the old ones sounded better (Bass Microsynth, Mutron, or what-have-you)". But the manufacturers have their reasons, and well ... you can't have everything. I believe it, but I don't have to like it.

I actually emailed Akai about rereleasing the Deep Impact. I got a prompt and polite reply which stated something to the effect of "We have no plans to do so at this time".

So it goes.

Realistically, I don't think they'd make much money. Sure, there's one guy every month or 2 who's willing to pay 800-1000 clams for one. But that actually doesn't translate into much of a market for a big manufacturer. They need to be able to sell maybe 10,000 of them to make a run worth it. I don't think that many people are that interested.

That's what I was alluding to. The number of people on Talkbass that want one and would actually buy it might be 100.

On the other hand, there are thousands of effects pedals out there. Are they all moving 10,000 units?

Really? I got mine for $189 BIN. There is one on eBay right now starting at $200 with no bids yet (still early in the auction though). I've seen a few go for right around $200 in the last couple of months.

I like to watch some of those auctions just to see what things are going for.

No, but the ones made by big companies are moving that many or more.

The problem with eBay is that they are totally courting the buyers and care less about sellers.

For example - sellers can NO LONGER leave negative feedback for buyers that don't pay, etc. If you can only leave positive feedback, why bother at all?

I would rather sit with an item on CL for 6 months than give any more of my $$ to evilBay
