THIS is why every bass player needs a RAT

Just scored another old RAT today. It's an early 90's rat with the LM308 chip. The one on the right is an 80's RAT also with the LM308. Haven't tried out the 90's RAT yet to see how it compares to the 80's. Both made in USA.

You'll be really close, but he also ran through an EHX Bass Microsynth on that record. If I remember correctly, Beard uses a Programmable BDDI too.

Awesome tone and an underrated player!

Been trying to figure out how he incorperates the bass synth in the songs. From what I can hear he just used it on maybe 1 or 2 on BSN. Unless he has it on with his proco rat. Big circa fan here haha

Killer thread. I have a RAT I used to use a lot and lately have not really needed it. It is like yours on the left. Serial # is 2988875.

Anyway, always think about selling it, but it's probably not worth enough to move. I guess ill to put in a new battery and try and get that grind going.

Do you guys think that a rat tail into a VT Bass could nail the Blue Sky Noise bass tone?

Agreed. Doesn't get to flashy, but his rhythmic skill is really great. does plenty of interesting **** in that sense.

I reckon the P-bass is pretty key to the tone as well. i have a P, Rat Tail, BDDI and a big ampeg rig and can get pretty damn close to that tone. particularly the imaginary enemy tone.

thought I'd bump this with some RAT lovin'

Russian Circles - Geneva live in Dour

pretty funny to re-read this thread and see how the Rat Tail was considered the "best RAT ever" 2 years ago, and now people claim it loses low end. I still love my Rat Tail!

Great band! They just played a free show at Millennium Park in Chicago on Monday. It was incredible!

I loved my Rat King but after all the continuous admiration for the Blower Box and one popping up for sale with the JohnK mod I just couldn't pass it up. It will be here tomorrow.

i'm confused, first everybody tells me not to get a blend on my rat tail, then everybody tells me the rat tail loses low end, and then i use the rat tail with the blend and it sounds just like nirvana/jesus and mary chain/electric wizard depending on settings and which bass i use, this is exactly what i wanted anyway

a flavor of the month we are used to here, but I find it funny that the Rat Tail can suddenly lose low end ;)

I loved my Rat King but I never accepted for a moment the claim that it did not lose low end. It has good low end retention, but it loses some. I always blended my RK, I don't have to with the BlowerBox. I think a LOT of pedals out there claim to not lose low end when hey actually do lose quite a bit of low end. You can always eq some of it back or something like that after the fact.

Again, the RK is a great RAT for bass. However, the low end retention on it is nowhere near the BlowerBox. I was not a believer myself until I got the BlowerBox and tried it for myself. I figured it would be yet another pedal where low end retention is claimed but grossly over exaggerated. I was surprised that ti was not the case. And, it does not accomplish it using a clean blend knob.

Will there be a RAT based pedal in the future that retains more lows or sounds better, I am sure there will be. People buy into the hype of pedals does not mean it was ever true. Compared to an original unmodded RAT, the RT/RK retains a lot more lows, not compared to a clean signal or BB.
