I have a female friend that I have known since kindergarten. She and I attended a public grade school, and then went to a Catholic high school together that closed after our freshmen year. We both transferred to another Catholic high school together. She is the only person that I went all through school with, and we were always friends. I moved away two years after high school and spent the next thirty years in different cities up and down the east coast. She and I lost touch in our twenties.
I retired nine years ago at age fifty and moved back to the city that I grew up in. Two years ago I was walking through a local mall with my wife as another couple approached walking the other way. The woman looked at me and shrieked, "Mike?!" By the way, I was very thin and had long blond hair the last time that she had seen me nearly forty years before. I'm chubby, with a shaved head and a white goa-tee these days. I look absolutely nothing like I did as a kid. I mean nothing. But she recognized me and when I heard her voice I of course recognized her. We introduced our spouses and caught up a bit. It was nice. I need to point out that we were never romantically involved in any way as kids, were always just good friends.
My wife and I both received FB requests from both of them and they have come out to see my band several times in the past two years. They are a nice couple and we all get along great. My brother is in the band with me and of course has also known my childhood friend for over fifty years. We were all talking between sets and my brother asked her how she could have possibly recognized me after all these years. Her husband broke up laughing and shared a secret that I had never known. She had a huge crush on me all through grade school and high school. They met in their thirties and he knew all about me. Me being your average oblivious guy, never had any clue. My wife thinks that it is hilarious. She explained to my old friend that I'm a great guy, but obviously not too bright.
The four of us get along great and happily it never got weird.
