I'm a big fan of Jazz basses, Musicmans, and 6 string Foderas, but this reminded why sometimes a p bass is best. simple, yet beautiful.
Classic cheese, great song, great bassline, and stunning precision tone.

I've been listening to a couple of CD's with Duck Dunn on bass and it drives me nuts...it's so bassy it's very hard to tell what some of the notes are, and sometimes hard to tell how many times he hits a single note. I'm pretty sure he used a P.
Maybe its because of EQ, different amps, different pickup specs, etc.

... but *gasp* P basses do have more than one sound, despite what's often said here.
Does anyone what particular pickup/s are being used for this good P sound?
I would have guessed both clips were a JB on the neck.
It's a precision alright, but it sounds like it's being plucked back by the bridge, which explains why some are hearing jazz sounds. Is it a 70s p or is it vintage? I really do know little about them. It has a maple fretboard. Does that mean it has an ash body?
No, it just means it has a maple neck. I don't know much about them either, but very few (if any) painted bodies (solid colors) are ash. There are sunburst alder bodies too. Sometimes Fender would put another color over a bass body which already had another finish to meet custom orders...like red painted over sunburst. I don't think anything's 100% with that stuff.
+1 My old Aria P bass sounds just like that when you play near the bridge. It adds a trebbly zing to the P THUMP

Thats what my bro does when we don;t have a singer. But we play metal which is a lot harder than that (I wouldnt have a clue how old it is, I'll guess 1840? Even though its more like the 70s)
