Gave up on jazz based don't like the sound with a pick,having a hard time to make them sound good in a mix if the music is a bit heavy.

Gave up on 5 strings.
I found one I could play but I don't need the benefits the b string brings and I can't go wild on a 5 like on a4.

Multiple attempts on both of these and there will be no more.

I have tried a ton of basses and now I know what I like and what I don't. My PERSONAL preferences: Love Jazz basses and Stingrays don't like P basses. I kept a 79 Ric 4001 and love how it sounds but I always prefer something else in a band situation. It will stay, because nothing else sounds like it. I am currently also digging a Spector NS2 and a Sandberg VM4. Oddly enough, me and the Sandberg just kinda "click" and I think it may be my forever bass. It's not flashy, not even a color I would choose, but somehow it just kinda feels right every time I play it and if I bring a second bass to a gig, I always play a set with it, but end up playing the bulk of the night with the Sandberg. Surprising, but why fight it......

I could never make good friends with a P bass until I put this one together. Roasted MIM J neck on a Warmoth roasted ash body, Geezer pup. I finally made very good friends with a P

5 strings. I buy one, sell it and say "no more". Then I buy another one, sell it and say "no more". Etc. Done this about 4 times over 20 years.

Last time was my last time, "I think."

I am on my third 5 string but I actually like this one. Will be able to confirm once I can get back with a band and really try it out.

Never really bonded with any of my previous fivers but I want one to try my hand at a more contemporary party band.

I was always a P bass guy and I've owned may different iterations of P basses (all of them good). However, in true TB fashion, owning one variation of a P usually led me to wanting to try another (e.g. I really like the AVRI 57, maybe I should also get an MIJ 51). Once I moved to my current 5 string, I kind of found my home. I loved having all of the different 4 string Ps, but the 5 string P always worked - it was more universal. In short, you can eventually get it right.

Cool to see all the different opinions.

Gonna say it, probably unpopular. I haven't found a Warwick that works for me.
They are incredibly well made and appear to sound great in the hands of others. I can't play them, they don't feel or sound right to me even though I want them to. Took me only 3 tries to find out. (ironic that my profile pic is an awesome looking Koa one).

One the happier side.
I spent a couple decades trying Pbasses and gave up, settling squarely on Jazzes instead. Tried about 5 different ones. Then recently got a Pino and loved it, was a different league. And more recently landed on a Alleva-Coppolo KBP4 which is completely awesome. Checkmark - Pbass covered don't need to look anymore.

I was always primarily a DB guy, and I've always liked fretless BG, but i don't like playing fretless BG. I also gave up on 5-string, even though my only BG for 15 years was a 5-string Warwick - just couldn't connect with it every time I took it out over the past couple years.

Now I'm primarily playing a short scale BG, and my trusty EUB feels too big, but i can't decide on my next move for a bowable, shorter scale fretless bass.

Any bass with 6 strings. Haven't owned one but tried to play them more times than I can count. I just can't get used to having a string above G, and it really doesn't fit with the material that I'm playing anyway.

They serve a valued purpose and I'm glad that there are folks who can utilize and enjoy them!

Jazz basses.

I’ve had several. 4 string, 5 string, active, passive. I’ve heavily modded them. I’ve left them stock. Ive tried rounds. I’ve tried flats.

They always frustrate me when I play them in a band/group setting. I can never get them to sit where I want them to.

And yet, I still want one.

I still have one, but I don’t play it much. It’s an active 5, my only 5 string currently, and I prefer 4s. I want another passive 4.

For it's not basses but electric guitars. I've had a couple of Strats, a Les Paul, a DeArmond semi, a couple of lawsuits from Japan, a Dano, and a whole bunch of other stuff. They came, they didn't stay, they went. I now have an Epi Casino, which stays around only because I need an electric. Acoustics, no problem. My current, a Larrivee, I've had for ten years. Basses, no problem. I guess I just don't like electrics.
