Mark Beem is right. Politics is pretty much avoided in the forums themselves. I was referring to some members' signatures which, quite frankly, I find in-your-face controversial.

I know, I know...I'm doubtless trampling on someone's freedom of expression. Fine. I (and maybe I'm alone, here) would like to navigate this site without seeing unsolicited political opinions whether I agree with them or not.

And then there are the signatures and avatars which just barely avoid (I'm not sure how) the proscriptions against obscenity and profanity. Wasn't there something in the rules about making this site acceptable for viewing by young teens some of whom might be girls?

I'm sure someone will disagree with me but oh, well...

If you see an avatar or signature that is overtly political or objectionable, send one of us Mods a PM. When you read through hundreds of posts a day, sometimes things slip under the radar. We're only human. Sometimes I scrutinize the content of a thread so closely that I don't even notice the people posting in it, unless they blatantly disregard the rules.

If you're referring to the thread in which you said you deliberately drove the price of an ebay item up through sheer spite, with no intention of buying the item, what you did was not cool. It was not funny.

What you did was cruel and people told you this. Pointing this out is not flaming. And it is not abuse.

But, you've said you're sorry and if you've learnt from the incident then it's maybe not all bad.

While I'm relatively new to TalkBass, I'm not new to message board communities and the 'spikes' in tension throughout the year, while annoying, aren't completely unavoidable.

All past events aside, I pretty much see the periods of "increased tensions" throughout the year as a norm for any community, online or in-person. With summer's end, the weather getting colder, and the stress of 'back to school' (whether you're a parent, student, or someone who deals with either) I think tensions are bound to run a little high this time of year. And no matter how civil we may try to be, it's not always easy.

Even level-headed folks such as myself are prone to misguided ranting and raving. Eh, but as long as this calm after the storm has a positive impact on the community, awesome. This just shows how strong the community really, when people manage to overcome an adversity. Some may not make it, but that's a fact of life too. It's not a perfect world.

Either way, I love the community and hope I can bring something of value to it.
