Thoughts on Roadworn Fenders

Despite the cloney wear patterns my RW P bass (Fiesta Red) is one of the best playing and best sounding basses I've ever had. In the studio it sits in the mix so well I don't have to tweak it at all. Same goes for live. Just plug it in, turn it up and play. The fact that it's already worn in cosmetically also makes it the perfect bass to take to places where you'd think twice about bringing a more expensive high end bass. Plus, it's light weight and easy to play all night long. I don't see any downside to having a RW bass at all. If you have the luxury of owning multiple basses then having a RW in your arsenal is a good choice. And really, when it comes down to it, no one in the audience knows that it's a RW or otherwise. The only comments I've ever gotten on mine were about how good it sounded.

Amen. Nobody except for Internet message board nerds like us give a hot damn if your bass is fake roadworn or "real" roadworn, they just care how it sounds. Great sounding and playing basses, end of story. If you're getting your panties in a bunch about the relic job, I suggest you spend a bit of time thinking about the things in life that actually matter. Most people rock these basses because they are excellent basses, not because they are posers. If you are under 40, it would be pretty hard to claim you "earned" the wear on that vintage 60s or 70s bass yourself anyway!

Yeah. In 1973, I couldn't afford a new P-bass (like $500 or so), so I bought a used one for $250. It was made in 1955. I still have it. It's great. :p

However, my 2008 3tsb Roadworn Jazz is a better instrument. I bought it new, so I had to pay something like $870 for it. It was new, but now it is used, because it is just about the only thing I want to play besides my upright. :D

Which I also got use, BTW. It was made in about 1850. Got a good deal on that 'cause it was used. ;)

I love my "road worn" '57 reissue Precision bass.

To me they are nothing more then Fender basses that have been given a relic or used look. Sure you can compare apples to oranges, however that is pretty much it if you ask me. They are great basses though.

I thought the HW 1's were cool.
Myself, I like the feel of the RW necks. I thought they are the explosive device :)

The rest of the relic thang I don't need.

As myself and others have said, if they just did that to the neck and keep the weight down like they have and, keep the lacquer finish like the HW 1's, I think they would really has something :hyper:

I got to fiddle around with a RW P in fiesta red last night and LORD ALMIGHTY......what a bass!!!!

It had flat wounds on it and was set up VERY low. It played finger styled like a dream, and thumped like a hooker in rush hour traffic. It was quick, easy, and soooooooo smooth.

If only I wasn't saving for more recording gear, she would have been MINE!

They are all indivuals.
Tried one when they they appeared, actually thought it was an underpriced original. Not impressive.
PUP was muddy and indistinct. There was also a new MIA Std there which I compared it with and the MIA was the keeper of the two.
