Double Bass Throw out all your rosin but this brand

Well after a few weeks of trying out lots of Rosin I think for the moment i prefer the Leatherwood 50 and the Oak rosins. I also like the Weideoft but it has been a little inconsistent but that may as well be user error. The most disappointing is the Kolstien soft.... For what ever reason I cant really bet the stuff to get on the bow.
But for practicing scales and long tones and preparing to play in a community orchestra post covid, the Leatherwood and the Oak really are quite nice for my purposes.

I just received 2 cakes, 40% and 50%. Both are glossy and slippery, just like Jason Heath described it. Considering how spendy these rosins are, I'm not happy! I roughed them up with sandpaper and I managed to get some on my bow. The rosin sounds amazing but my strings and the bridge got very dusty. This is definitely the old formula. I hope I can get some fresh stuff otherwise this was the last time I spent $80 on two cakes of rosin notwithstanding the great sound!

Making the same experience you reported off I mailed Andrew and it was no problem to replace the old badge to new ones...as told here..

I'm too a pops user, and audiophile. Pops make a very good sound across the entire register, just apply it very very sparingly. It works really well in cooler regions, around 20 celsius.
I actually contacted the CEO about this and he assured me that they aren't shipping out any "old cakes".

I exchanged emails with both Andrew and Severino. I sent them photos. They agree that what I describe is more characteristic with the old formula. They both seemed very pleasant and helpful. I asked the supplier to examine his remaining stock to see if they are glossy on the bottom and have this slippery lacquered sheen on the top. Maybe I just got un-lucky. After heating them up and using sandpaper on the top I was able to get some on the bow and I love it! However, there is an extreme amount of dusting on the strings, body and bridge. I thought these were supposed to the "dust free". I even had to clean of my bow stick because of the build-up. Very weird, but like I said, both gentlemen were very nice about it so hopefully this will get resolved. After 10+ years of Kolstein Soft and Pops I'm ready for a change. If it turns out that in fact I got the new formula then I won't take a chance again as these are clearly nothing like what Jason Heath describes in his video about the new stuff.

Let us know when you get the new rosin and what you think (in comparison to the old). I too am noticing a lot of dusting myself and suspect that I may have an older batch.

I just exchanged emails again with Andrew. It turns out that I have the new formula for sure. All the rosins sent to North America are now the new formula. We are trying to arrange a Zoom meeting which might prove difficult considering the time difference between Australia, Canada and the Netherlands (Severino who helped with the formula lives there) to try to figure out what went wrong at the beginning. When I say the beginning I mean that I couldn't get any rosin in my bow before I melted it down in warm water. Other than the powdering, the rosin is amazing. My bow handles better and I get a huge and even sound. I hope nonetheless that this amount of powdering is not the norm because it IS a LOT! I just bought a new Peterson clip-on tuner with a nice shiny glass surface. It really shows just how much rosin is flying off the bow. I'll keep you posted, but in a worse case scenario.......I'll just have to clean the bass religiously and often.
I too have written Andrew, suspecting I have the old formula due to the powder and looked a bit glossy at first. Guessing I may have the new formula as I order this back in Early Sept (in US).
I too see a LOT of powder, which is something I'm not used to (from Pops/Kolstein). Maybe it's me...but the Leatherwood seems to work best shortly after the initial application. Sometime thereafter, (again YMMV/maybe it's me) but it seems that the initial grip has changed (dissipated maybe), which has me wondering' is there something about the powder/the presence thereof that is impacting grip? It would seem that one would not need to apply more rosin if power is still actively coming of the hair, no?

This is an excellent marketing idea. They wouldn't have to give out three full-sized, but they should think about making a sample size -- just enough for us to use 1-5 times -- as a giveaway. If it's that good, a "try before you buy" would work wonders for sales.
I get used to 40% Leatherwood. It works well, even outside at 10 degrees (Celsius). No powdering.
In the summer i had one hot outside gig. The rosin did not melt like pops would, but was kind of gumlike and i could not get any on the hairs. That really bugged me!! Maybe i take the 20% when hot. At normal temperatures it is useless for me.

pmad bass, I also come from the Pops and Kolstein soft school so we probably have the same expectations. I don't share your experience with respect to the grip dissipating, mine stays on and works well. What freaked me out was the initial behavior of this rosin. Did you have a lacquer looking layer on top that was just impenetrable? My bow has never been better, it was just re-cambered and has the best white hair I ever had so when it had dead spots like someone put grease on it I flipped out a little. I've been nerding out on this rosin too much. I'll keep using it and see what those guys will come up with as a solution. I hope this is a one-weird-batch problem and not the norm.
The marketing/branding for this stuff is so twee I can't handle it. $80 buys a lot of groceries.
