Thumb rest question

I 'm getting a thumb rest for my P bass

I've been placing my thumb on the PU , but i often loose my place on it's edge, so maybe this is easier for my thumb to 'find' while playing.

my question is, where do i put it? is there some particular placement that is normal, already engineered under the pick guard? or geometric hand to string measurement applicable?

The Fender 70s Precision Bass had the thumbrest right over the strings, close to the neck. Check it out and see if this position might work for you.

I THINK if you buy the thumbrest, there's a template included.

You can try double-sided tape and change until you find an optimal spot.

Mine in fact did come with template; it's just a recommended position though YMMV.

Mine had a template as well. I chose about 1/4" closer to the neck pup than the template chose.

No rules. Put it where you want it.

That's where it was on my '81 Precision, and where it also is on my '74 Jazz. That position is great for a softer attack, and I use it a lot for ballads and reggae. It sounds very different from the over-the-pickup position, though, so that'll be a consideration.

If you are losing your position off the edge of the pickup, then why would a thumb rest be any better? If your elbow or wrist simply want to interact with the bass in a different position due to personal ergonomics, I understand that. go for it. Tugbars have been mounted all over the place on all sorts of basses, and the factory template may or may not suit you. Try a temporary with double sided tape before you start drilling holes. But a thumb rest will not necessarily help you anchor your thumb any better than the edge of the pickup; it will simply be in a different position.

And to answer the second of your questions, no there is NOT an 'engineered spot' under the pickguard for a thumb rest.
