Fixed the neck and bought pickups, tuners and a bridge, then made a pickguard and truss rod cover on the router table.

I use Black Beauties as well...

When played with a pick, the colour wears off in the area you hit the strings... I can't tell about finger picking, as I don't do that...

Same here. It takes a little while for the wear to start showing tho, at least from my experience.

It does wear off eventually for me playing fingerstyle. IMO it's nothing to worry about, and it can be kind of fun to visually see just which notes you play more often and which ones never get played.

Playing fingerstyle I find for the most part the black just wears off where they contact the frets. It takes a while though.

Another Black Beauties fan. Finger style, they wear pretty evenly at both the pups and frets I tend to abuse: 5, 7, 9 & 10, 12. It is kind of fun to watch.

I think they sound good out of the box and stay that way for a while. My other favorite, Hi Beams, tend to need several days of playing to break in.
