What are the factory strings for new Thunderbirds? I have read that it's .45-.65.-.85-.105, but though I also read that they're D'addario, the ball ends are all gold-colored, not the multi-colored D'addario.

God bless, indeed. Every time I hear a recording of him play I am inspired. Especially the live recordings.
I think they are own brand strings.
Probably gibson strings.
But some music stores put different strings on the basses that they have on the floor in the store.
Most basses that come out of the factory have dead strings.
This is my experience.
I went from the factory string to one of the brightest (La Bella SS rounds, really bright right?). It made a little difference. The tone knob now has some brights to bleed off and the bridge sounds a little more different from the neck, but I think the biggest problem is the pickups in terms brightness.
Not sure I would call it a problem, TBird pickups are notoriously dark and heavy sounding. Gives them that signature sound.
I have the TBird Plus pickups in my 2012 Explorer, since I have multiple basses I like the tonal variety they add.

Maybe that's an advantage, then. You can use really cheap strings.
Anyone ever move the jack from the front to the side on your Epi TB? Thinking about doing it. Having it in front scares me a little bit. Worried I'm gonna step on or bang that sucker one day and end up with a huge hole on the front of my bass.

Well, I only have VVT and I'm not even gonna attempt to do any kind of re-wiring so I'll probably end up putting a dummy switch/knob or something there to take it's place. Now if I could just find a drill and a bit.....
My main concern is this is going to require a different kind of input jack I believe. Something like a threaded metal tube type thing. I don't even know what they're called. Are those a PITA to install or is it pretty straightforward?

Fair enough, I do get what you mean. I switched from my usual Rotosound RD 66LS to Slinky cobalt's to add a little brightness back in, I am pretty happy with the tone that provides. Definitely still heavy and dark, with just a touch of brightness to liven up the sound.
I did that on the Goth that I rebuilt. The jack had been yanked thru the front so I moved it to the end just like on the Gibsons. Used the same type of threaded-barrel type of jack. Wasn't hard to do. I drilled a pilot hole first then used a paddle head bit. It was my first attempt at anything like that and it went smoothly.

I prefer the end barrel jack myself. I was never comfortable with the front positioned jack on my 76 from years gone by. I was always afraid I would rip it out from stepping on my cord.
